  • What Is IP68? Understanding IP Ratings for Lights
    Feb 14 2026

An IP68 rating for lighting means the fixture is fully protected against dust and can withstand continuous submersion in water under specific conditions. Whether you’re lighting up your poolside, fountains, or areas prone to heavy rainfall, an IP68-rated light fixture is built to endure the elements while providing high performance.

But is it always the right choice? Let’s break down everything you need to know about the IP68 rating, when it’s necessary, and why it matters for your lighting solutions.

    What does IP stand for?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, a standard that measures how well a product is protected against the intrusion of solid objects (like dust) and liquids (like water). The system is used across various industries, primarily electrical and lighting products, to ensure they can withstand different environmental factors.

    Understanding IP ratings

The IP rating consists of two digits: the first digit indicates protection against solid objects, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 6 (completely dust-tight). The second digit represents protection against liquids, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 9 (protection against high-pressure water jets).

    What is the difference between IP65, IP67 & IP68?

The key difference between IP65, IP67, and IP68 lies in the level of protection against water immersion.

    • IP65: Protects against dust and water jets (not submersible), ideal for outdoor environments where the light might be exposed to rain.
    • IP67: This type of protection offers protection against dust and can withstand brief submersion in water up to 1 meter (usually for 30 minutes). It is great for locations like bathrooms or outdoor areas prone to flooding.
    • IP68 offers the highest level of protection, ensuring complete dust tightness and the ability to withstand continuous immersion in water, typically to depths of 1 meter or more. It is perfect for underwater or pool lighting.

  • How To Remove Light Fixture From Ceiling
    Feb 13 2026

According to Rowabi's expert, Noah Miller, the most critical first step is safety: always shut off the power at the circuit breaker and confirm it is off using a non-contact voltage tester. The process involves removing the shade and bulbs, loosening the mounting screws that secure the fixture's canopy to the ceiling box, and gently lowering the fixture.

The final step is to disconnect the wires, the black (hot), white (neutral), and ground, by unscrewing the wire nuts, then cap the bare house wires with wire nuts for temporary safety before finishing the removal.

    What you’ll need

Before starting, gather all the essential tools and materials. You’ll need:

    • Eye protection: To shield your eyes from debris or dust.
    • Screwdriver or screw drill: Depending on the fixture, you might need a Phillips or flathead screwdriver.
    • Non-contact circuit tester: To ensure the electrical current is off before handling any wires.
    • Step stool or ladder: A stable platform to comfortably reach the ceiling.

These basic tools will help you safely and efficiently remove your ceiling fixture without damaging your home or risking injury.

Prepping to remove a light fixture

Just like any lighting fixture and chandelier removal or electricity-related work, safety is the top priority. Start by shutting off the power to the room where the fixture is located. Head to your circuit breaker panel and turn off the correct switch for the fixture you’ll be working on.

Once the power is off, double-check by using your non-contact circuit tester to ensure no current is flowing through the wires. If you’re extra cautious, you can turn off the power to the entire home. Don’t forget to turn off the switch in the room and test the light to make sure the power is off before moving forward.
