About the Author:

Dr. Sohinder Singh Wanjara Bedi (1924–2001) whose folk tale collection - Bata'n Mudh Kadeem Dian has this folk tale, was one of the most respected voices in Punjabi literature, especially known for his unmatched work in preserving and popularizing Punjabi folk tales. Born in the village Dhamial in Sialkot district (now in Pakistan), he migrated to India during Partition and dedicated his life to literature and education.

Dr. Bedi began collecting folk stories at a young age, and over the decades, he published more than 80 books, including children’s tales, short stories, literary criticism, and folklore studies. His most iconic contribution is the eight-volume “Punjabi Lokdhara Vishav Kosh”, a global encyclopedia of Punjabi folklore that took him over 45 years to compile — a rare and monumental feat.

He served as a professor at Dayal Singh College, Delhi, and was deeply committed to using literature to preserve Punjabi cultural heritage. In 1988, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection "Galīeṅ Chikkar Dūrī Ghar".

Dr. Bedi believed in the power of simple storytelling to teach deep values. He passed away in 2001, but his work continues to inspire generations of readers, writers, and educators.

Gargi’s autobiographical English novel, 'The Naked Triangle', explores themes of identity and sexuality. He founded the Department of Indian Theatre at Panjab University in 1962, shaping the careers of many renowned actors. His book 'Rang Manch' (1962) earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award, and he was honored with the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998. Gargi passed away in Mumbai, leaving a legacy that deeply influenced Indian theatre.
