Jonah is not the hero of this story. In fact, he's a reluctant and rebellious prophet who begrudges God's generousity. When God calls, he runs. Do we do the same? How do we try to resist God? Why can't we outrun him? And what's the alternative to resisting and running? What's so significant about Jesus? Why would the world take notice of his birth in obscurity? In the story of the Magi's visit, Matthew wants us to understand who Jesus is by answering three questions: Is Jesus the Messiah? Whose Messiah is he? And if Jesus is the Messiah, what is our response? Like the Magi, if we can grasp who Jesus is we too can come and adore him.
