Have you ever messed up, like really messed up? Maybe you have, and you think, "There is no way I can go to church!" That, my friend, is a lie. Jesus tells us to: come as you are," because that is His heart. That is our heart as well, so come listen to a message about a man who REALLY messed up, and still was able to come back to his Father's house.

We now take a summer break from our Matthew studies to take a look at some of the Psalms in a series we call, “Summer of Psalms.”

I begin this series by being blessed to teach Psalm 1. A great psalm! There are multiple ways we can take this but I think a main idea is the contrast of happiness and unhappiness. The Psalmist gives us a path to bring us into a consistent joy and happiness. You don’t want to miss this one.

Engaging and penetrating the darkness should be a normal Christian discipline. Because it is part of being the church that drives back the gates of hell. This next teaching in Matthew centers around the discipline of fasting. Which by the way is a major piece of our Christian arsenal. I’m going to take us into some of the deeper workings of fasting to hopefully encourage us all to utilize it to destroy the enemies strongholds in our lives as well as the lives of others around us. One of my all-time favorite days to teach the word of God: Father’s Day!!! I loved being a dad and I love and respect dads, step-dads, and anyone who stepped in to be that dad/male figure to a young person who needed that. Today, as I do every year, I chose a text of scripture that takes us into the mind of the man we call “dad.” Us dads are more passionate, caring and complex than you think. I’ve titled this year’s message: The Mighty Men, because that’s what dads are. I hope all you men come out and be a part of this uplifting time for dads!!

As Jesus journeys onward in His corrective teaching, He now tackles the sensitive topic of giving. It isn’t sensitive to Jesus, because giving should be a normal practice for a follower of Christ. In this teaching Jesus approaching giving from a different perspective. He doesn’t tell us how much. Instead He talks about how we give. He moves it from the outside to the inside; our hearts. Should be interesting.

Jesus now ups the ante in his teaching. He will correct a culture that makes promises to people while simultaneously keeping loopholes allowing them to never have keep the promises uttered. We do live in a world of broken promises, but we as followers of Christ should never be the promises breakers. Instead, we should live a life of promise keeping.
