Together, we navigate the development of self, partnerships, parenting, and the general network of connections you build across a lifetime. As a non-profit counseling center, Nick Finnegan Counseling Center (NFCC), is always trying to find ways to support the greater community. Through conversations exploring the family life cycle, as well as common individual and relational concerns, we hope to expand access to mental health resources. NFCC exists to make mental health care affordable and accessible, and this is just one of the routes to serve our mission. We hope that through this podcast you're inspired to connect with others, and that you feel supported along your mental wellness journey.     Society tells us that there is one path for many people, but we are coming to understand there are many paths, for many people! In this episode, we listen to two mental health experts talk about why its okay to take a non-traditional route on your journey through life and the challenges and rewards that come with it!

    About our Guest

    Erica Guzman is a licensed master social worker in the state of Texas. She has worked in the non-profit sector since 2007 and obtained her master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2022. Her working experience is in ESL literacy, survivors of domestic violence services and advocacy and youth mental health services. She is currently in supervision for her clinical social work license.

    Meet Our Host

    Anna Crain is a Licensed Master of Social Work and Nick Finnegan Counseling Center's, Lead Outreach Counselor. Anna holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University (TCU) and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California (USC).

    She has worked in a variety of settings, spending majority of her time serving as a non-profit administrator, school administrator and school social worker. She has had the opportunity to help clients work through several challenges such as anxiety, grief and loss, ADHD, ASD, life-stressors and trauma both individually and through groups. 

    Anna can be found in one-on-one counseling sessions at NFCC and out in the community, leading support groups and presenting to groups through outreach talks.

  • Managing Our Kid's Big Emotions

    There are many challenges when it comes to parenting but one thing that makes it easier is understanding your child's emotions and even more, helping them understand them! Sometimes feelings can feel bigger, when you're smaller. What may seem unimportant to an adult can feel monumental for a child. Let's help you, help them... help you! Haha.

    About our Guest

    Julie Duong (yeung) is a native Houstonian who is passionate about the intersection of education, mental health, and equity. She is currently a licensed professional counselor at Nick Finnegan Counseling Center who works with adults and adolescents. Before becoming a mental health professional, she started her career in education, teaching middle school English. She continues her work in schools now by facilitating student groups and also talking to teachers and parents about emotional regulation in the classroom and at home.

    Finding gratitude on your journey to sobriety may seem impossible when you are facing the challenges of being a substance user. But you are not alone. Family support, treatment, counseling, and a recovery community have been key in the successful journey to sobriety that today's guest, Jay, talks about in this episode.

    Jay Magness struggled with substance abuse in his teens and early twenties. After hitting a huge milestone of being sober for a little over a decade, Jay openly shares about his journey, knowing that his story can help others. As a man with a lot of roles - husband, father, son, brother, director, friend. Jay has served as an advisory board member at Nick Finnegan Counseling Center for the past three years, with hopes of connecting individuals and families to get the help that they deserve.
