They were meant to explain why the world is unstable, why power corrupts, and why even gods are never free from consequence.At the center of these myths stand the Olympians—the major deities worshipped by the ancient Greeks. Twelve gods who ruled the cosmos from Mount Olympus: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes, and either Hestia or Dionysus, depending on the tradition. Their name comes not from an abstract title, but from a place—Mount Olympus itself—where divine power was believed to reside.
