Samantha and Wimarc do their best to defeat Renier and his team as they make another attack on the Alpine compound, resulting in Samantha’s capture. Meanwhile, Aaron leaves the Dominican monastery, only to have Friar James insist he join him on the quest. At first, Aaron resists, then relents when James accepts Aaron’s unique qualities, which the friar admits might broaden his own faith. This is quickly put to the test as they stop to rest at a parish church … and James is suddenly forced to face Pierre and his team – fresh off their attack of the Western School. Pierre tells his story of burning a coven of witches, which James realizes is about Aaron and his people.

After the demise of the Muein temples in the Alps, a wounded Aaron takes refuge in a monastery run by Dominican friars. There, he discovers a mystery regarding young monks being attacked while in Avignon, the assaults driving the acolytes into madness and suicide. Nevertheless, he hurries to leave the infirmary and rejoin Samantha. Meanwhile, Wimarc returns to the Alps and uncovers the devastation left by Renier and the Papal army. Joined by Samantha, they prepare for an inevitable confrontation with the oppressors, knowing they will come looking for survivors to translate the stolen texts.
