  • Eric LaRocca Returns: Mass Shootings, Controversial Horror, and the Burnt Sparrow Trilogy
    Sep 4 2025

This week on Mostly Horror we welcome back acclaimed author Eric LaRocca, one of the most exciting voices shaping modern horror. Eric is a three time Bram Stoker Award finalist, Shirley Jackson Award nominee, and Splatterpunk Award winner, recently praised by Esquire as a writer helping lead horror into its next golden age.

We talk about Eric’s upcoming novel We Are Always Tender With Our Dead, the first entry in the Burnt Sparrow trilogy arriving September 9th. The story explores America’s fixation on mass shootings and how horror can help us process collective tragedy. We also dive into the controversial nature of horror itself and the conversations around what themes and subjects the genre should or shouldn’t address.

Along the way Eric reflects on how their work has evolved since Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke and Everything the Darkness Eats, while digging into abominations, animal imagery, and what it means to cross thresholds. We also cover dream adaptation ideas, the lasting impact Eric hopes to leave with readers, and a brand new round of the Spook’em Scare’em Starter Kit.

This is also one of our first episodes since moving from Wondery to SiriusXM, which means new episodes now arrive every Thursday wherever you listen!!! Sooo...

  • Macon Blair on Directing The Toxic Avenger, Monster Movies, and the Magic of a Guy in a Suit
    Aug 25 2025

Writer, director, producer, and actor Macon Blair joins us this week to talk about his fascinating career, and his bold new take on a cult classic: the unrated remake of The Toxic Avenger (in theaters August 29).

You’ve seen Macon on screen in films like Blue Ruin, Green Room, Thunder Road, and even Oppenheimer. He also won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize with his directorial debut I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, starring Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. Now, he’s back with a gooey genre shift...reimagining Lloyd Kaufman’s radioactive hero for a new generation while honoring the messy, subversive spirit of Troma.

We dig into Macon’s creative path from Murder Party with Jeremy Saulnier all the way to working with Elijah Wood and Peter Dinklage on this bonkers new Toxie. Along the way, we talk about practical effects (yes, intestines are involved), absurd kills that didn’t make the cut, the challenges of redesigning an iconic monster, and why The Toxic Avenger might actually be the perfect antidote to the Marvel-ification of movies.

and of course we ask the important question… when can we expect 2oxic 2venger: Toxie vs Dracula vs the Unicorn’s Horn in Space?

If you love cult cinema, superhero parodies, or just a good old fashioned over the top practical effect, you don’t want to miss this conversation sooo...

  • Horror Hangout with Gigi Leal: Ice Cube’s War of the Worlds Chaos & Henry Zebrowski’s UFO Project
    Aug 18 2025

This week on Mostly Horror, we’re kicking back with horror influencer Gigi Leal (@RoomforScream) for a proper Horror Hangout.

We start with the question on everyone’s mind: what exactly is going on with this new War of the Worlds movie starring Ice Cube? It’s a screen-life take on the H.G. Wells classic, dropped on Prime Video in July, and somehow managed to land a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Depending on who you ask, it’s either a chaotic disaster full of bad CGI and shameless product placement or a campy mess worth watching with friends.

Then Sean talks about the thing he’s actually excited for: Last Podcast on the Left’s Henry Zebrowski is working on an alien comedy called UFO: Unbelievably Friendly Organisms. Details are scarce, but the title alone already has us sold.

From there, Gigi brings some sharp horror hot takes, we trade recommendations you’ll want to add to your watchlist immediately, and end up covering everything from comfort horror to movies that make you want to scream into the void.

If you’re into horror news, spicy opinions, and finding your next favorite creepy flick, this one’s for you sooo...

  • From ‘Say My Name’ to ICK: Joseph Kahn’s Culture Shaking Career
    Aug 4 2025

Joseph Kahn has directed some of the most iconic music videos of all time...Say My Name by Destiny’s Child, Everybody by the Backstreet Boys, Without Me by Eminem, Bad Blood by Taylor Swift…the list goes on. But he’s also a filmmaker who refuses to play it safe. His newest film, ICK, is a wild, splattery horror comedy that somehow feels both unhinged and deeply personal.

This week we sit down with Joseph to talk about his journey from shaping pop culture to using monsters as metaphors for modern apathy. They dig into the film’s messy tone, the real life frustrations that inspired it, and what he hopes people take away from it.

This one’s funny, sharp, and full of fake blood. Just how we like it sooo...

  • Slutty Horror: Defining the Undefinable with Cray
    Jul 28 2025

This week, we’re joined once again by internationally touring DJ, producer, streamer and horror head Cray for a wide ranging conversation about one of our favorite unofficial subgenres: Slutty Horror.

What started as a joke quickly spiraled into a full blown thesis. Together, we try to define the undefinable. What makes a horror movie slutty? Is it the aesthetic? The attitude? The blood slicked lip gloss and reckless decision making, a cast as hot as the day is long? All of it?

We talk icons, archetypes, monster crushes, party playlists, and the undeniable connection between horniness and horror. It’s weird, it’s fun, and its SOOO slutty.

    You're gonna love it sooo...

  • Sinners and the Horrors of Cultural Vampirism.
    Jul 21 2025

    Hey Horror Fans!!!

In this episode of Mostly Horror, we dive into Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s Southern Gothic vampire film that blends horror, history, and culture in a masterful way. This isn’t just a vampire story, it’s a reminder that art and music are fundamental parts of our human spirit, something many cultures, especially the Black community, have held onto and treasured even in the face of oppression. Especially in the face of oppression.

We explore how Sinners reflects this deep connection to creativity as essential to identity and survival, and how it challenges institutions that try to suppress or control that spirit. The film’s rich themes and striking imagery gave us a lot to talk about so if you’re into horror that’s thoughtful and layered, this episode is for you!!! Sooooooo...
