  • Ep264: Advances in DNA Research Further Obliterate Book of Mormon Narrative
    Jul 2 2025

The Book of Mormon posits that some or all Native Americans are descended from Israelites who migrated to the Americas. However, DNA studies of modern Native Americans show no significant genetic links to Middle Eastern populations, leading to debates about the Book of Mormon's historical accuracy.

The Book of Mormon describes migrations of Israelites to the Americas, including groups like the Jaredites, Nephites, and Lamanites, who were said to be the "principal ancestors" of the Native Americans and now said to be "among" the ancestors of the Native Americans as DNA continues to challenge this narrative.

Advances in DNA studies continue to show that most Native American populations have strong genetic links to East Asian populations, with no evidence of Middle Eastern ancestry.

  • Ep263: The Arizona Tucson Mission Disaster
    Jul 1 2025

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by former LDS missionary, Tanner Talbot as we take a deep dive into the Arizona Tucson Mission circa 2016.

Tanner was the 54th missionary to be sent home by the mission president, who had been serving for only 21 months at the time. This alarmingly high rate of missionary turnover reveals a darker underside to what was occurring.

Tanner discusses how missionaries already struggling with mental health broke under the pressure of the strict programs being implemented turning the mission into anarchy. Attempted murder, self-harm, sexual predators to minors, sexual assault, theft, destruction of property, assault and battery, and more were happening by missionaries in the Arizona Tucson Mission. Most instances seemed like they were left unpunished and were quietly swept away.

  • Ep262: Why a Literal Hill Cumorah is a Huge Problem for Mormonism
    Jun 18 2025

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Unoriginal Jim to discuss the important story of The Hill Cumorah and the complete lack of any kind of evidence at that location.

Mormonism came forth in an environment where the origin and

identity of indigenous populations was highly questioned. There

were several books published between the 16th century and the

1830s that promoted the idea that Native Americans were either

seafaring Jews or members of the lost 12 tribes. At the same

time many of the same publications promoted the

    Moundbuilders myth.

The Book of Mormon did not attempt to provide scientific or

archaeological evidence. Joseph Smith presented the Book of

Mormon as the proof of Native American history and blended

    both theories.

The Hill Cumorah narrative draws from these contemporary

theories and presents them as a historical fact.

It is central to the text and to Smith's entire message and the

identity of the church. And it is a falsifiable claim.

  • Ep261: The Art of Living a Meaningless Existence
    Jun 14 2025

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Landon and Rebecca are joined by a bookclub friend, Steph, to discuss the concept of living a "meaningless" life without the confines of a high demand, high control religion.

We base our discussion around the fantastic book, "The Art of Living a Meaningless Existence: Ideas From Philosophy That Change the Way You Think" by Robert Pantano.

Each of us share personal stories of finding that outside the structure of religion, "meaningless" becomes a wonderful journey of discovery and self awareness.

This was a great conversation that I'm sure will resonate with all of you too!

    Jun 4 2025

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca, Landon, and Ganesh Brigham Young's fall from grace as a result of the accusation that Brigham was responsible for polygamy, not Joseph Smith. And in addition, Brigham Young did a lot of awful other things that Joseph would never do.

Ganesh show that many things Brigham Young is accused of, Joseph Smith did years earlier and independently of Brigham. In other words, they were two peas in a pod.

  • Ep258: The Erie Canal's Pivotal Influence on Joseph Smith and Mormonism
    May 21 2025

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by the wonderful Doug Vincent to discuss a much overlooked powerful influence on Joseph Smith and the origins of Mormonism itself, the Erie Canal.

During Joseph Smith's formative years, the Smith family lived in Palmyra New York. In describing Joseph's youth, there is little mention of the influence living so close to such a wonder of modern engineering, the Erie Canal, had on him.

The Erie Canal was the internet of its day. It was a super highway of goods, services, news, people, ideas, religion, ancient curiosities, and more. Joseph's family sold cakes and root beer in a stand along the canal and would have had direct contact with all of this. The canal had three stops in Palmyra so its influence permeated the entire town of Palmyra.

The Erie Canal is not only responsible for the phenomenon known as The Burned Over District, where multiple religions and movements began, but it shaped the foundational ideas of Mormonism itself and "educated" Joseph in a ways that are often overlooked in the narrative of an "uneducated farm boy."
