  • 23. Growing up Mongolian
    Jun 3 2025

What was it like to grow up in Mongolia, then and now? In this episode, we explore the joys, challenges, and cultural contrasts of childhood in Mongolia. From nostalgic memories of June 1st celebrations to the stark realities kids face today, air pollution, poverty, and safety concerns, I look at how growing up Mongolian has changed over the years. With personal reflections, listener stories, and real talk about today’s social issues, this episode captures both the warmth and complexity of childhood in this "young nation".

  • 22. Spirit, Stigma, and the Rise of Secondhand Fashion in Mongolia
    May 15 2025

What happens when traditional beliefs meet modern thrift culture? In this episode, we explore how Mongolia’s secondhand fashion scene is evolving, from the stigma of komissiin baraa to the rise of trendy thrift shops like Toirog.

Many Mongolians believe that clothes carry a person’s energy or their hiimori, or life force - making secondhand fashion both spiritually complex and socially loaded.

The host Dono also shares a personal journey into thrifting, while unpacking how younger generations are redefining secondhand as stylish, sustainable, and meaningful.

I have started listening to this series in preparation for a three-week visit to Mongolia in June 2024, to participate in a group activity (Racing The Planet 250k Gobi March) and to explore for about 2 weeks on my own. I previously visited Mongolia (centered around Ulaanbaatar) for two weeks in June 2024. I am finding this resource informative, varied, and true-to-my last summer's experience, i.e., realistic. This is one of the many helpful and outstanding attributes of the podcast - the author is unabashedly honest about her country's positives, negatives, and, furthermore provides information built-in about some of her country's unique characteristics (e.g., why Mongolians sprinkle milk around the airport). An especially unique and helpful attribute of this series is that the author-speaker is a native Mongolian who knows her country well, yet having lived abroad for years she can compare, contrast, and relate how Mongolia and Mongolians appear to outsiders. As a bonus, the author-speaker is an academic cultural anthropologist who is curious and knowledge about her country from a scientific investigative point of view. I have watched nearly 90 hours of videos about Mongolia, as well has listened to the very few podcasts I can find about Mongolia, and this series is the best yet. I highly recommend it for anyone planning to visit Mongolia (beyond just an "in and out, oh wow) visit, and/or one seeking to better understand modern Mongolia

Outstanding resource - prepare for immersive visit
