This research investigates the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) and the risk of obesity-related cancers (ORCs). The study analyzed data from the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort, involving over 450,000 participants across 10 European countries, and found that higher adherence to the MedDiet was associated with a modest reduction in ORC risk. Interestingly, the study found no evidence that this association was mediated by body mass index (BMI) or waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The study concludes that embracing the MedDiet could contribute to cancer prevention through pathways beyond just managing weight. Further research is recommended to understand the mechanisms that may be contributing to the protective nature of the MedDiet.
