  • Star of tomorrow rising today
    May 5 2023
I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Viggo Ortiz, a young aspiring talent from Dallas Texas, who recently moved to Austin Texas with his family to pursue a bright future in Soccer. Viggo and his team Austin FC brought back the Generations Championship from Florida. The annual tournament offered MLS and international sides the chance to match up against one another, with talented prospects from around the world battling it out in Florida over the past week.  Some of the best and brightest players in both MLS academies and around the world competed at the 2023 Generation adidas Cup in Florida. MLSsoccer.com has named a Best XI of players from MLS and abroad that impressed scouts and observers at the annual tournament. Viggo Ortiz was one of those names! Few teams stole the show at the 2023 Generation adidas Cup quite like Austin FC, and Ortiz was responsible for several magical moments. He won a penalty against New York Red Bulls that put his side on the way to a win, and his passing and dribbling ability earned him the MVP award for the U-15 age group. His father Bernie Ortiz attributes "Futsal" for Ortiz's soccer development! Since the age of 6 Viggo played A LOT of FUTSAL!!

  • Started from the bottom
    Apr 19 2023
Adrienne Sorensen, started from the bottom, she took over the program in 2010 after a 2-15-2 finish the previous year. The program has steadily improved each year making the post season every year from 2011 to the present. In 2016 the program went to the State Elite 8 and continued to make the Elite 8 in 2017 and 2018. Third time was the charm as the program made their first ever final 4 appearance in 2018 falling 2-1 in the state semifinal and finishing 3rd in the state and #9 in the Nation. The 2019 United Soccer Coaches preseason poll debuted the Mustangs at #2 in the Nation and the team spent every week of the 2019 regular season in the top 5 Nationally. Sorenson takes the most pride in the over 90% sophomore transfer rate from 2010-present, most moving on with scholarships to play at the next level. In spring 2019 7 sophomores signed National Letters of intent to play at the Division I, Division II and NAIA level. Helping her student-athletes reach their goals and develop as people is the top priority for Sorenson, a junior college product who transferred to Cal State Stanislaus and graduated with her BA degree in Kinesiology in 2009. At Sierra she led the team in goals as a freshman and won a Big 8 Championship. As a transfer she led the team in game winning goals as a junior and in points as a senior. Sorenson is able to relate to her players having been a junior college product and hopes to inspire them to be their best selves. “My players understand we have a total commitment to excellence in everything we do here whether it’s on the field, in the classroom or in the community. We are process driven and know that success is a byproduct of relentless work ethic.

  • Soccer Movement with Rob Gray
    Apr 19 2023
The best athletes in the world all have some sort of sport specific trainer or program they use. I had the chance to talk with Rob Gray. After graduating from Folsom High School, he decided to pursue his new found passion. Coach Rob attended Bryan College and received a degree in Advanced Health & Fitness in 2010 before receiving a B.S. from California University of Pennsylvania in 2015. • She is Legend
    Apr 19 2023
I had the pleasure speaking with Lesle (the first ever recipient of the Carla Overbeck award) and all I can say is our conversation was supposed to be just 30 minutes!! Talk about legend, she is legend. Here let me describe Lesle in a few lines…it starts like this: She’s an individual who is actively working within the U.S. Soccer landscape (commissioner of the GA league) she has a unique ability to motivate and guide others, which in turn contributes to the effective and efficient functioning of the GA organization and the landscape overall. She’s willing to “carry the watercooler,” and lead by example, doing the little things that fosters an environment of trust and credibility. She adapts and innovates readily to new situations; does not rely on the way things have always been done. Mentors and cultivates teammates and colleagues, specifically those in less-tenured roles, creating a culture of respect that fosters an atmosphere conducive to achievement; Contributes to the success of an initiative that benefits those outside their own organization and/or places emphasis on collaboration within and among membership. Thank you Lesle Gallimore :-)
