MLK Day is the only federal holiday that is also a National Day of Service , designed to be a "a dayon, not a day off." Marches associated with MLK honor his use of peaceful pubic ptrotest to confront unjust laws and practices. They recall historic actions like Birmingham campaign and the Selma-to-Montgomercy marches, where visible nonviolent crowds helped shift public opinion and spur federal civil rights legistation. In 2026, Northern California Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Community Foundation hosted MLK march from Caltrain Station in San Francisco to Yerba Buena Gardens. AS they stated, "When we march from San FRancisco's Caltrain STation to Yerba Buena Gardens, we symbolically walk in the footsteps of the Selma-toMontegomery marches and recommit to protecting voting righs and human dignity today." This day and everyday matters to combine learning, marching, and sevice throughout our every day lives to show youth and adults around the world the importants of show up, speak out , and service and justice TOGETHER.
