  • Self-sustainability – Water
    Apr 20 2025

Living Off the Grid in the City Podcast. A significant benefit of living off the grid is the ability to be self-sustainable, which means you can provide for your basic needs without relying solely on others. Many people believe they are already self-sufficient because they pay for these needs, but in reality, this often involves limited choices about where and how to obtain them. For instance, most go to supermarkets for food, pay for water utilities, and depend on banks for shelter. This reliance makes us vulnerable if money runs out, or during crises like pandemics or wars. The question then becomes whether you have the skills and resources to meet your basic needs independently.

Self-sustainability can be achieved to varying extents. It requires the skills and access to resources necessary to fulfill your basic needs indefinitely. Everyone should have access to free water, food, and shelter, which are viewed as human rights. However, this access has often been limited, and individuals must be creative to regain it. Living off the grid allows individuals to access key resources and develop the skills necessary to protect and share them. This means that self-sustainability extends beyond basic needs and includes other areas as well.

The text highlights, in particular, the importance of being self-sustainable regarding water. It emphasizes the economic advantages of disconnecting from utility water systems. To successfully manage your water needs, it is crucial to establish alternative water sources before cutting ties with purchased water services. Multiple alternative sources should be readily available. The text outlines essential steps to become water self-sustaining: first, find and maintain access to water sources; second, transport the water to your living area; third, have systems in place to use the water for everyday tasks; and fourth, consider how to store water safely.

Utility water is easily accessed, but free water sources also exist, such as rainwater. Collecting rainwater requires containers placed in open areas for collection. Groundwater can often be accessed, but it usually involves significant initial investment to install wells and pumps. The text also suggests looking for natural bodies of water but highlights the need for legal access and the importance of treating and filtering any water collected to ensure safety.

Storing water acts as a safeguard during periods when access is limited. Various containers are available for storage, and these must be kept clean and maintained to avoid contamination. Proper management of stored water is necessary to ensure its quality and safety over time. Overall, achieving self-sustainability, especially in water management, involves careful planning, resourcefulness, and ongoing maintenance.

  • Avert high costs of living - food
    Apr 3 2025

Living Off the Grid in the City Podcast. This episode emphasize that food is a fundamental human need, and access to it should be a basic right. It criticizes the high cost of food, noting that it is a significant burden for many families, exacerbated by inflation and systemic issues. Food insecurity is highlighted as a pressing issue affecting millions in the U.S. and globally, with limited, and complicated access to food aid programs.
This episode also discusses how corporations and governments contribute to the problem by prioritizing profits and reducing support for social programs. I advocate for self-sustainability through food production, such as planting crops or raising animals, which could reduce reliance on the commercial food system, lower expenses, and provide healthier food options. The ultimate goal is to empower individuals to take control of their food supply, promoting independence and resisting corporate exploitation.

  • Avert high communications costs
    Dec 30 2024

Living Off the Grid in the City. Communication is considered a human right and should not be restricted by any government or institution. It is unfair to charge exorbitant sums for using modern basic communication technology, as this marginalizes ordinary people and does not allow them to benefit from competition in the market to obtain lower prices. In addition, relying on geographic location to access communication services can be dangerous in emergency situations, as payphones are becoming less common. Governments and companies are taking advantage of this need and are willing to exploit it. In short, it is necessary to find ways to avoid the excessive costs of communication services and to ensure that everyone has access to modern means of communication without being forced to pay disproportionate amounts.
