  • Paano ginagawa ng PAGASA ang weather forecasting? | John Manalo
    Aug 18 2025

In this episode of #LiknayanPodcast, we sit down with Dr. John Manalo, a leading expert in atmospheric science and ozone research. Dr. Manalo’s groundbreaking work explores the urgent issue of ozone layer depletion, focusing on the links between greenhouse gas concentrations, tropospheric warming, and the formation of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). His research shows how these clouds drive chemical reactions that release active chlorine—posing a serious threat to ozone molecules.

With a strong emphasis on ozone measurements and monitoring, Dr. Manalo highlights why keeping track of ozone levels remains vital, even decades after the Montreal Protocol. His collaboration with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has also contributed to the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) Program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), using advanced tools such as the Dobson Spectrophotometer.

Join us as we break down the complexities of atmospheric science with Dr. Manalo and uncover insights that matter for both science and society.

    Topics discussed:

    • Overview of weather forecasting
    • Fundamental principles of atmospheric science
    • How climate and ozone data are collected
    • Advice for students and aspiring climate scientists
