Elder law is an area of legal practice that specializes on issues that affect the aging population. The purpose of elder law planning is to prepare the elderly person for financial freedom and autonomy through proper financial planning and long-term care options. The major categories are estate planning, administration, tax questions. Medicaid, disability, long-term care issues. Guardianship, conservatorship and commitment matters, including fiduciary administration. Other issues found under elder law are; wills, trusts, protection against elder abuse, neglect, and fraud, end-of-life planning, all levels of disability and medical care, retirement planning and Social Security benefits.
