  • TrulySignificant.com celebrates the 97th Oscars with 1961 winner George Chakiris from West Side Story
    Mar 14 2026
On the eve of the 97th Oscars, our network honors Oscar winner George Chakiris as Truly Significant in a reprisal of one of our very first podcasts from the nascient days of broadcasting.

George Chakiris is truly significant as an Oscar winner for several reasons that go beyond simply receiving the award. His win reflects a combination of artistic achievement, cultural impact, and film history. 1. His performance helped define one of the greatest movie musicals ever Chakiris won the 1962 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks gang, in West Side Story (1961).
    • The film itself became legendary, winning 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, the most ever for a musical film.
    • West Side Story remains widely regarded as one of the most influential musicals in cinema history.
His portrayal combined acting, dancing, and presence, making Bernardo one of the most memorable characters in the film. 2. He represented the “triple-threat” performer Chakiris is often described as a triple threat: actor, singer, and dancer. In West Side Story, he:
    • Delivered powerful dramatic scenes
    • Performed demanding choreography in iconic numbers like “America”
    • Embodied the physical intensity of the Sharks gang leader
At the time, very few actors could execute that combination at an Oscar-winning level. 3. His win elevated the status of dance in acting awards Historically, dance-heavy performances rarely won acting Oscars. Chakiris’s role required exceptional choreography and physical storytelling. His award recognized that:
    • Movement and dance could carry dramatic meaning.
    • Musical performances could be as powerful as traditional dramatic acting.
    4. His career path made the win remarkable Before West Side Story, Chakiris had spent years as an uncredited dancer in Hollywood musicals. Examples include:
    • Dancing in Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” number
    • Background roles in films like White Christmas
Winning an Oscar after starting in the chorus line illustrates a classic Hollywood breakthrough story. 5. Cultural significance of the role Bernardo represented a Puerto Rican immigrant character in a story about prejudice and gang conflict in New York. While the casting reflected the practices of the era, the film itself addressed:
    • immigration tensions
    • identity and belonging
    • cultural conflict
Chakiris’s intense portrayal helped make those themes resonate.

  • TrulySignificant.com presents GO TEXAN podcast with Neal Newsom, founder of Newsom Vineyards
    Feb 26 2026
TrulySignificant.com presents GO TEXAN podcast featuring Neal Newsom, pioneer in Texas grape growing and winemaking.

Neal's family had grown cotton around Lubbock for over a century, but concerns about water shortages and a desire to diversify led him to explore new crops- ultimately choosing wine grapes.

Neal planted three acres of Cabernet Sauvingnon on very challenging land. The first commercial crop in 1989 brought back about $500 to a winery in Garden City- a humble start that set the course for the business.

Over decades, he and his wife Janice expanded to 150 acreas with 19 varieties including reds and whites like Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Pinot Grigio, Albanino and more.

Neal is well known in the Texas wine community not just growing grapes but also for hosting educational events like Newsom Grape Day to bring growers and winemakers together.

  • TrulySignificant.com presents GO TEXAN with Paul Bonarrigo of Messina Hof Wineries
    Feb 26 2026
LIVE from the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association Convention, our GO TEXAN podcast team interviews the illuminaries of the $24 billion wine industry in our Lone Star state.

Paul Bonarrigo is the 7th Paul in the lineage of Messina Hof winery leader with his wife Karen, current president of the industry association (TWGGA-Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association). They took over leadership of Messina Hof in 2013 from Paul's parents Merrill and Paul.

They are the first family of Texas wine- six generations of winemaking history, and steadfast commitment, Paul Vincent and Merrill Bonarrigo established the fourth oldest winery in Texas. Now a second-generation family business, with a seventh-generation winemaker in place, Paul Mitchell and his wife, Karen, lead the most awarded winery in Texas.

Paul and Merrill were approached for a study on grape feasibility in Texas from a Texas A&M graduate student. Armed with that data, the Bonarrigos planted the first Messina Hof vineyard at their home in Bryan, TX. The one-acre experimental location consisted of varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Lenoir. The Bonarrigos didn’t intend to open a tasting room initially. However, after their neighbors kept knocking on the door and asking to try and then buy the wine, it quickly became obvious that Messina Hof needed a hospitality program. For the first four years, the Bonarrigos dedicated themselves to the vineyard lifestyle by honing the time-tested methods and practices of the winemaking trade. In 1981, Messina Hof began its award-winning legacy with a medal in the Texas State Fair for a Black Spanish-Cabernet blend. With this first victory, the Messina Hof mantra came to life: “Anything is Possible.”
