Date: August 20, 2025 Legacy Makers: Stories of Black Inventors and Icons Title and Show Info Episode #34. Lifting as She Climbed: The Unyielding Legacy of Mary Church Terrell Featuring: Toni Davis (Host & Storyteller). Summary 🎙️ Lifting as She Climbed: The Unyielding Legacy of Mary Church Terrell What do you get when you cross fierce intellect, linguistic fluency, and an unshakable moral compass? You get Mary Church Terrell. An educator, orator, organizer, and certified barrier-breaker. Born in 1863 amid war and unrest, Mary was destined not only to witness history, but also to write it in bold ink. From mingling with Frederick Douglass at age 17, to publicly outwitting white supremacists in three languages, she didn’t just demand a seat at the table. She built new ones. In this episode, we trace Mary’s life from the grand porches of Memphis to the picket lines of Washington, D.C., and from founding the NACW to fighting segregation in court in her 80s. A pioneer in civil rights, women’s suffrage, and education, Mary’s story is one of grit wrapped in grace and resistance, and fueled by intellect and progress powered by purpose. She sued racists, marched with Delta Sigma Theta, dismantled Jim Crow one law at a time, and didn’t stop until everyone could sit at the lunch counter. Whether addressing world leaders or starting kindergartens, Mary lived her motto: Lifting as we climb. Tune in for a tale of courage, clarity, and class. This isn’t just history. It’s a masterclass in how to change the world without ever losing your fire. 🕊️ Because Mary Church Terrell didn’t just open doors. She kicked them off the hinges. #LegacyMakers #PodcastEpisode #MaryChurchTerrell #BlackSuffragist #VotesForWomen Highlights: 00:57- INTRO. 01:04- MARY CHURCH’S BIRTH AS A FREE PERSON OF COLOR. 01:32- HER FATHER ROBERT REED CHURCH. 02:28- HER MOTHER LOUISA AYRES CHURCH. 02:52- HER BROTHER THOMAS CHURCH. 02:58- ANTIOCH COLLEGE’S MODEL SCHOOL. 03:38- OBERLIN COLLEGE. 04:30- EARNS A BA DEGREE IN CLASSICS. 04:43- TEACHES LANGUAGES AT WILBERFORCE COLLEGE. 05:03- EARNS A MASTERS DEGREE IN EDUCATION. 05:13- TRAVELS ABROAD. 05:22- RETURNS TO DC. 05:30- MARRIES ROBERT HEBERTON TERRELL. 05:49- THOMAS MOSS. 06:18- CO-FOUNDS THE COLORED WOMEN’S LEAGUE. 06:47- THE FEDERATION OF AFRO-AMERICAN WOMEN. 06:56- TWO UNIONS MERGE INTO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLORED WOMEN. 07:22- PURCHASE A LOT IN HIGHLAND BEACH, MD. 07:37- SUPERINTENDENT OF THE DC BOARD OF EDUCATION. 07:49- ESTABLISHES FREDERICK DOUGLASS DAY. 07:53- FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE NACW. 07:59- CELEBRATES THE FIRST ANNUAL FREDERICK DOUGLASS DAY IN DC SCHOOLS. 08:14- GIVES BIRTH TO THEIR DAUGHTER, PHYLLIS, AND ADOPTS HER NIECE. 08:23- SPEECH, “THE PROGRESS OF COLORED WOMEN”, AT THE NAWSA. 08:50- PUBLISHES, “LYNCHING FROM A NEGRO POINT OF VIEW”. 09:02- DELIVERS AN ADDRESS TO THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF WOMEN. 09:18- JOINS THE DC CHAPTER OF THE AAUW. 09:36- DELIVERS AN ADDRESS TO THE SENECA FALLS HISTORICAL SOCIETY. 09:44- CO-FOUNDS THE NAACP DC BRANCH. 09:57- ALLOWS HER AAUW MEMBERSHIP TO LAPSE. 10:05- CO-FOUNDS THE COLLEGE ALUMNAE CLUB LATER RENAMED THE NAUW. 10:22- ROBERT IS APPOINTED AS THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN MUNICIPAL COURT JUDGE IN DC. 10:36- ENDS SERVICE WITH THE DC BOARD OF EDUCATION. 10:42- WRITES THE OATH FOR DELTA SIGMA THETA AND BECOMES AN HONORARY MEMBER. 10:55- DESEGREGATES THE NEW YORK SUFFRAGE PARADE LED BY ALICE PAUL. 11:04- THEIR COTTAGE, VILLA AHOLA, IS BUILT NEXT DOOR TO FREDERICK DOUGLASS IN HIGHLAND BEACH, MD. 11:37- PICKETT’S THE WHITE HOUSE WITH THE NATIONAL WOMAN’S PARTY. 11:48- WAR CAMP COMMUNITY SERVICE. 12:02- INTERNATIONAL PEACE CONFERENCE. 12:10- WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM 12:19- 19TH AMENDMENT. 12:53- PURCHASES A MODEL-T CAR AND TAKES MECHANIC CLASSES. 13:02- WRITES HER AUTOBIOGRAPHY. 13:07- PUBLISHES HER AUTOBIOGRAPHY. 13:13- SERVES ON THE HIGHLAND BEACH CHARTER COMMITTEE. 13:21- INCORPORATES HIGHLAND BEACH, MD. 13:34- HER BELOVED HUSBAND, ROBERT, PASSES AWAY. 13:45- BURIED AT THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL CEMETERY IN SUITLAND, MD. 13:54- CAMPAIGNS FOR RUTH HANNA MCCORMICK. 14:07- ADVISES FOR HERBERT HOOVER’S PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN. 14:16- HONORED BY OBERLIN COLLEGE AS ITS “TOP 100 OUTSTANDING ALUMNI” 14:27- WORLD FELLOWSHIP OF FAITHS. 14:35- DENIED REINSTATEMENT WITH THE AAUW, DC CHAPTER. 14:58- FILES A LAWSUIT THE AAUW AND WINS. 15:19- FILES A LAWSUIT AGAINST THOMPSON’S RESTAURANT IN DC AND WINS. 15:55- CELEBRATES HER 90TH BIRTHDAY. 16:12- HER BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON. 16:23- MARY CHURCH TERRELL FUND. 16:30- BROWN V. Aug 6 2025
Date: August 06, 2025 Legacy Makers: Stories of Black Inventors and Icons Title and Show Info Episode #33. Bound by Ink and Liberty: Frances Ellen Watkins Harper and the Vote She Carried Featuring: Toni Davis (Host & Storyteller). Summary 🎙️ Bound by Ink and Liberty: Frances Ellen Watkins Harper and the Vote She Carried. Before Rosa Parks sat and before Maya Angelou spoke. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper wrote. In this thrilling, soul-stirring episode, we trace the incendiary arc of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Poet, abolitionist, orator, suffragist, and all-around force of nature. Born free but far from safe, in 1825 Baltimore, Frances sharpened her voice in the margins of injustice. Orphaned at a very young age, she was raised on scripture and insurrection, and from that crucible emerged a pen that would not flinch. From the hush of a home library to the pulpit of national suffrage conventions, Frances carried ink like a weapon and used it to carve her name into history. She taught in freedmen’s schools, contributed the Underground Railroad, refused trolley segregation, and comforted John Brown’s widow. Her poems weren’t pretty. They were powder kegs. First to publish a short story as an African American woman. First to unite race, gender, and reform with righteous fire. And when the 15th Amendment split the movement, she chose unity without silence. Through novels, lectures, and leadership in the National Association of Colored Women, she kept lifting as she climbed. Even when loss threatened to undo her. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper didn't live to vote. But her words; fierce, tender, and unrelenting, inked the path toward it. This is not a history lesson. It’s a battle cry. This is Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. 🔥 Pen. Paper. Power. Press play. #LegacyMakers #PodcastEpisode #FrancesEllenWatkinsHarper #BlackSuffragist #VotesForWomen #VoicesThatBuiltAmerica Highlights: 00:57- INTRO. 01:05- FRANCES ELLEN WATKNS’ BIRTH AS A FREE PERSON OF COLOR. 01:42- DECEASED PARENTS. 01:54- ADOPTED BY HER AUNT HENRIETTA & UNCLE WILLIAM WATKINS. 02:38- ATTENDS THE WILLIAM WATKINS ACADEMY FOR NEGRO YOUTH. 02:48- LEAVES SCHOOL. 02:56- WORKS AS A SEAMSTRESS & NURSEMAID. 03:29- PUBLISHES HER 1ST COLLECTION OF POEMS. 03:53- THE FIRST WOMAN TO TEACH AT UNION SEMINARY. 04:08- PENNSYLVANIA, WILLIAM STILL & THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. 04:24- POEM, THE SLAVE MOTHER. 05:10- EVALUATION AND EDUCATION OF OUR PEOPLE. 05:22- MAINE & PENNSYLVANIA ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETIES. 05:36- POEMS ON MISCELLANEOUS SUBJECTS. 05:41- BURY ME IN A FREE LAND. 06:06- REFUSES TO GIVE UP HER SEAT ON A TROLLEY. 06:20- THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN TO PUBLISH A SHORT STORY. 06:37- WRITES TO JOHN BROWN. 07:04- OUR GREATEST WANT. 07:20- MARRIES FENTON HARPER. 07:42- TO THE CLEVELAND UNION SAVERS. 07:56- SARA LUCY BAGBY. 08:19- GIVES BIRTH TO THEIR DAUGHTER, MARY FRANCES HARPER. 08:31- HER HUSBAND FENTON PASSES AWAY. 08:47- THE CIVIL WAR ENDS. 08:53- SHE RELOCATES SOUTH TO TEACH NEWLY FREED SLAVES. 09:41- THE NATIONAL WOMAN’S RIGHTS CONVENTION. 09:46- WE ARE ALL BOUND UP TOGETHER. 10:05- 15TH AMENDMENT. 10:24- THE AMERICAN WOMAN SUFFRAGE ASSOCIATION. 10:32- NOVEL, MINNIE’S SCARIFICE. 10:55- FREEDMEN’S BUREAU. 11:03- POEMS. 11:07- SKETCHES OF SOUTHERN LIFE. 11:21 NOVEL, SOWING AND REAPING. 11:41- SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COLORED SECTION OF THE PHILADELPHIA AND PENNSYLVANIA WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION (WCTU). 11:59- NOVEL, TRIAL AND TRIUMPH. 12:05- SPARROW’S FALL AND OTHER POEMS. 12:10- THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN IN DC. 12:26- NOVEL, IOLA LEROY. 12:46- THE MARTYR OF ALABAMA AND OTHER POEMS. 12:53- ATLANTA OFFERINGS, POEMS. 12:58- CO-FOUNDS THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLORED WOMEN. 13:14- VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE NACW. 13:26- HER DAUGHTER, MARY FRANCES HARPER, PASSES AWAY. 13:50- FRANCES ELLEN WATKINS HARPER PASSES AWAY. 14:19- FUNERAL HELD AT THE FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH. 14:27- BURIED AT EDEN CEMETERY. 14:48- THE 19TH AMENDMENT. 15:13- CONCLUSION. • 30: What a Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Story
    Jun 25 2025
Date: June 25, 2025 Legacy Makers: Stories of Black Inventors and Icons Title and Show Info Episode #30. What a Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Story Featuring: Toni Davis (Host & Storyteller). Summary 🎙️ Before he was Satchmo, he was a boy from The Battlefield—a dirt-poor New Orleans neighborhood with more gunshots than good luck. But out of the chaos came a sound that would change music forever. In this sweeping, soulful episode, we follow the full arc of Louis Armstrong’s extraordinary life: from his scrappy beginnings and reform school redemption to revolutionizing jazz with the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens. You'll meet the mentors, the marriages (some stormy, some steady), and the moments that made a boy with a cornet into the king of swing. With Lil Hardin’s ambition, King Oliver’s call, and a trumpet that refused to play quietly, Louis tore through the 1920s and '30s, shattered racial barriers in Hollywood, and dazzled radio waves across America. He wasn't just playing music—he was changing hearts. From wartime tours with the All-Stars to stealing the show in High Society and knocking The Beatles off the charts with Hello, Dolly!, Louis became a global icon. And when he recorded What a Wonderful World, it wasn’t just a song—it was a statement of defiant optimism in a fractured time. This is not just the story of a jazz legend. It's the story of a man who turned pain into poetry, rhythm into revolution, and joy into a global language. 🎧Tune in and travel from New Orleans to the Vatican, and from heartbreak to high notes—because the world still spins to the sound of Satchmo. 🎺What a Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Story begins here. 🎺 Top of Form Top of Form Highlights: 00:57- INTRO. 01:02- LOUIS ARMSTRONG BIRTH. 01:23- HIS MOTHER MARY ALBERT. 01:25- HIS FATHER. 02:07- SENT TO REFORM SCHOOL. 02:30- CORNET. 02:54- BEGINS PERFORMING. 03:10- KID ORY’S BAND. 03:19- MARRIES DAISY PARKER. 03:29- CREOLE JAZZ BAND IN CHICAGO. 04:22- MARRIES LIL HARDIN. 04:30- FLETCHER HENDERSON’S ORCHESTRA IN NYC. 05:23- THE HOT FIVE AND THE HOT SEVEN. 06:02- “SATCHMO”. 06:38- FILM DEBUT. 07:09- RADIO. 07:57- ENDS MARRIAGE WITH LIL HARDIN. 08:02- MARRIES ALPHA SMITH. 08:15- MARRIES LUCILLE WILSON. 08:24- THE COUPLE PURCHASE A HOME IN CORONA, QUEENS, NY. 08:31- FORMS THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG ALL STARS BAND. 08:53- PUBLISHES MEMOIR. 09:54- RELEASES THE SONG, “WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD”. 10:21- PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM. 10:27- PLAYS FOR POPE PAUL VI AT THE VATICAN. 10:57- PASSES AWAY. 11:31- BURIED. 11:42- CONCLUSION.
