Welcome to Leaders ADAPT: Beyond the Boardroom, where we explore the human side of leadership and uncover how the qualities that make us strong executives also shape how we live, grow, and connect outside of work. Today’s episode is all about self-awareness, the very first step in the ADAPT framework, and why it is the foundation not only of great leadership but also of meaningful living.

When most people think about leadership, they imagine strategy, decision-making, or the ability to inspire a team. But at the core of all these skills lies the ability to understand yourself. Self-awareness is more than simply knowing your strengths and weaknesses—it’s about recognizing your emotions, your patterns, and the way your choices affect others. Without it, even the most talented leader risks becoming reactive, disconnected, or misaligned with their true purpose.

Think about this in practice. A CEO may lead a company worth millions, but if they lack awareness of how their communication style impacts their team, they can unintentionally create fear, frustration, or disengagement. On the other hand, a leader who knows how they show up in the room can adjust, build trust, and empower their people. Self-awareness is what allows leaders to pause, reflect, and lead intentionally instead of by default.

But awareness isn’t confined to boardrooms or business meetings. It spills into our personal lives in powerful ways. Leaders who are aware of their stress levels, their emotional triggers, and their blind spots tend to have healthier relationships, more resilience in times of change, and a deeper sense of balance. They are better partners, parents, friends, and community members because they’ve learned to manage themselves before managing others. This is why I say leadership and life are inseparable. Who you are outside of work shows up in how you lead, and who you are as a leader impacts how you live.

So, how do we cultivate this kind of awareness? It starts with slowing down. In a world that rewards speed, leaders often forget to take a breath and reflect. Yet it is in stillness that patterns reveal themselves. Whether it’s through journaling, mindfulness, or simply setting aside ten minutes each day to ask yourself tough questions, creating space for reflection is non-negotiable. Another key step is inviting feedback. Often, the people around us see what we cannot see in ourselves. Listening with openness, rather than defensiveness, creates growth. Finally, awareness requires presence. In conversations with your team or your loved ones, resist the temptation to multitask. When you give your full attention, you notice nuances that would otherwise slip by, and those moments of presence strengthen both trust and connection.

As leaders, our influence is not defined only by the revenue we generate or the goals we achieve. It’s defined by how we show up, how we adapt, and how we impact the lives of those around us. Self-awareness is the first step in that journey. When we know ourselves deeply, we are better equipped to lead others authentically and to live with purpose beyond the boardroom.

Thank you for tuning in to Leaders ADAPT: Beyond the Boardroom. In our next episode, we’ll explore the second pillar of the ADAPT framework: Direction—how to create clarity not only for your team but also for your life path. Until then, remember that leadership is not just about what you do, it’s about who you are, and awareness is where it all begins.
