In this episode, Fabian Kluth has the pleasure of speaking with gallerist Judy Lybke, founder of the gallery EIGEN + ART.
Judy originally dreamed of becoming a cosmonaut. He grew up in the former GDR, but as a political outsider labeled “asocial” by the state, his path took a very different turn. In 1983, together with other so-called enemies of the republic, he organized the first exhibitions and founded the gallery Eigen + Art in his own apartment in Leipzig.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Judy began exhibiting his gallery at international art fairs and opening temporary gallery spaces abroad. He caused a stir by presenting painting at a time when the medium was widely considered to be dead.
Today, from Leipzig and Berlin, Judy and his team run an internationally active gallery representing artists such as Neo Rauch, Ulrike Theusner, and Tim Eitel.
We talk about Judy’s journey, the new and emerging art hubs, and why art is ultimately sustained by human relationships.
The conversation is in German.
