John Urdi, President and C.E.O. of Mammoth Lakes Tourism, discusses the 2024-25 snow year as well as the many summer events. This beautiful California town, off of Hwy 395, is located in the Eastern Sierra 30 minutes south of the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park.
Winter 2024-25 saw 300 inches of snow with skiing and riding until June 14th. Mammoth averages 400 inches with skiing and riding into July. Mammoth Mountain boasts 3,500 acres with a 3,100 foot vertical drop and is easy to connect to direct flights from Denver or San Francisco. Eastern skiers and riders have several connecting flights through Newark and most major airports, including Chicago, Houston, Seattle and Boston. The winter Denver and San Fran flights fly into the Bishop, CA airport, code "BIH." Smart visitors book trips to Mammoth Lakes to arrive on Sunday, ski/ride Monday to Friday when the mountain, and the restaurants in town, are far less busy than weekends, and return home on Saturday. There are no mountain passes on Hwy 395 from Bishop Mammoth Lakes and the Bishop airport's lower elevation usually means it is open when Mammoth Mountainis getting a dump of snow. It is easy to book your trip at: www.visitmammoth.com/fly
In Summer, in addition to the short drive to Yosemite, you can ride a bus from the ski area base to "Devil's Postpile", a National Monument and this podcast provides some interesting history of this geologic wonder. Summer activities include hiking, mountain bikiing, kayaking, wakeboarding and fishing on the many lakes that give the town it's name. John also mentions the several weekend Summer festivals. While October is known as "Endurance Month" with challenges such as the 100 mile bike race and the Spartan World Championships the first week in October.
To sum it up, Mammoth Lakes is a full service ski town with bars, restaurants and most all necessities desired during your winter or summer visit. For more, please visit: www.visitmammoth.comCopyright Dave Leonardi "Always Upright"
