  • Joe Mangrum is an internationally recognised artist known for his vibrant sand paintings and immersive installations. Based in New York City, he has created over a thousand large-scale, ephemeral sand artworks in public spaces across the world, captivating audiences with bold colour, intricate detail, and spontaneous execution. Born in Florissant, Missouri, Mangrum studied Fine Art at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating, he travelled extensively across North America, exploring natural landscapes and indigenous sites that deeply shaped his artistic direction. He began by making ephemeral artworks with collected flowers and plants, reflecting his growing interest in impermanence and the natural world. In 1995, Mangrum settled in San Francisco, where his work expanded to include found objects, technology, and environmental themes. His first solo installation was presented at San Francisco State University. Over time, his visual language evolved into a fusion of urban patterning, marine life, botanical motifs, and cross-cultural symbolism—all delivered in vivid “Pop Art” colour. Mangrum’s signature sand paintings are created entirely by hand, using a unique method of pouring coloured sand in layers—sometimes with precise, close-up lines, other times with diffused gestures from above. These works are both intricate and fleeting, drawing on influences from street art, mandalas, and natural systems. In 2003, he received the Lorenzo de Medici Award in New Media at the Florence Biennale for his piece Fragile. Since then, his work has been exhibited widely, including at the Museum of Arts and Design and the Asia Society in New York, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, the Sunshine Museum in Beijing, and the Doe Museum in the Netherlands. Highlights include his 24-hour performance installation Asynchronous Syntropy at the Museum of Arts and Design’s “Swept Away” exhibition, and his participation in Watch Your Step at The Flag Art Foundation. He has also exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery Rotunda in Washington D.C. and undertaken residencies at the de Young Museum, Ashe Cultural Center (New Orleans), and Red Gate Gallery (Beijing). In 2018, Mangrum was commissioned by designer Prabal Gurung to create a sand installation for New York Fashion Week. He has also completed permanent public works, including a sand painting embedded into the pavement in San Francisco’s Mission District. His work has been commissioned by festivals such as Coachella and Art Basel Miami, and collected by private and institutional patrons around the globe. A committed educator, Mangrum has given talks and workshops at the School of Visual Arts, SUNY Geneseo, Adelphi University, and the United Nations International School, among others. He frequently works with students and has presented in both museum and classroom settings. Mangrum is also an advocate for environmental and humanitarian causes, supporting initiatives such as Love For Japan, Riverkeeper Alliance, and World Environment Day. His work has been featured on Sesame Street, in PBS’s Spark, Humans of New York, The New York Times, CNN, LA Times, and the UK’s Antennae Journal. From sidewalks to galleries, Joe Mangrum transforms spaces into living canvases—inviting viewers to pause, engage, and reflect on the beauty of impermanence.
