  • 66. Robert Hough (author of Anarchists in Love)
    Jan 22 2026

Robert Hough is the author of eight novels, including The Final Confession of Mabel Stark, The Culprits, and The Marriage of Rose Camilleri. Today we are discussing his newest book, Anarchists in Love, an historical novel about the relationship between well-known anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander ‘Sasha’ Berkmann. We discuss the novel, his inspiration, process, and Goldman and Berkmann’sinfluence on anarchism.

Robert premiered this book at the Eden Mills Writer’s Festival in September, which I also attended. I was immediately drawn to it because of my own work surrounding anarchism, namely Rain’s Agenda and The Rise and Fall of Chaz Oregano. Rain was written first, and anarchism is portrayed therein generally positively, as I use it as an anti-authoritarian framing device. Chaz presents a much more negative case, wherein our hero is very much caught up in a militant anarchist cell, and the novel builds to what anarchists call the propaganda of the deed, which we discuss herein.

  • 65. The Pattaya Gambit (an Olive Yang story)
    Jan 15 2026

In debt to some Thai gangsters, crossdressing Burmese "princess" tries to run a ruby smuggling scheme just after the end of World War 2, at a ping pong club in Pattaya, Thailand.

The Pattaya Gambit was developed as a short story within my Yang-Yoshiko universe, a prequel to my 2025 novel Tiger Blues. It has since expanded beyond the bounds of a short story, into a novella. Today we are previewing the first three chapters *of the first draft*.

  • 64. A Bangkok Ping Pong Show (A Thai travelogue)
    Jan 8 2026

In 2019, I took a 4-country tour of Southeast Asia, a trip which would ultimately influence the development of my Yang-Yoshiko series in 2025. Part of that trip included a visit to a ping pong show at a go-go bar named Suzie Wong, in Soi Cowboy, Bangkok.

I must be doing something right (?) with SEO, because the travelogue I wrote afterwards is consistently the second most popular page on my website. Now I have put that travelogue to the mic.

Next week, I will be premiering a new Olive Yang short story, The Pattaya Gambit, which takes place at a ping pong show. heavily inspired by the events of this travelogue.

    Episode is explicit.
