Families are being given vouchers that potentially drive funding away from public schools in Texas. Texas and fellow Texas House democrats voted against the legislation to protect families and support public education; republicans by and large voted for the legislation–and won. In this episode, Linda unpacks what happened in this legislative session, and the impact the passage of this legislation will have on Texas residents. Last week, it looked like the stock market was going to crash: it actually did crash, but it recovered by the end of that trading day. Linda explains what intraday trading is. We are witnessing Trump manipulate the stock market right now, using his Truth Social and X feeds to signal stock market drops and recoveries. This is, needless to say, unprecedented. Trump is reversing on tariffs, delaying them, and making exceptions for certain goods, which is adding to stock market volatility and chaos. Currently, Linda is not making new investments. Linda examines the most recent jobs report–and while we added 228,000 jobs to the market, the unemployment rate increased from 4.1% to 4.2%. Normally, positive jobs numbers would be reflected positively in the stock market, but the market isn’t celebrating at all. Trump’s tariffs and resulting reciprocal tariffs from trading partners like China are causing stock market chaos. Speaking of stock market chaos… We’ve been waiting and wondering if and when the market was going to crash. It is now. This is not the time to sell off your entire portfolio. This is the time to hold on–that will only cause the stock market to crash further. This is the time to invest in those blue chip stocks that you normally can’t afford. This is the time to hold fast and have patience, and manage your emotions as an investor. Remember: we’ve seen market crashes before. We’re currently headed towards a bear market, which means that yes, the stock market is crashing, or has crashed (depending on when you listen to this). And yes, the catalyst is Trump’s tariffs, and the possibility of a full-blown global trade war. Last, week the stock market neared correction territory after Trump enacted sweeping tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. After the stock market nearly tanked, Trump walked back the tariffs. We are in a limbo–will Trump eventually enact more tariffs? Are we heading towards a stock market crash? Trump’s capricious decisions are impacting all of us, republican and democrat alike, and the economy and stock market are suffering. Linda also unpacks a new jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While job numbers are up (yay!)unemployment numbers are up too (boo!), especially among Latinx folks. This doesn’t bode well for the economy and job seekers. Sweeping layoffs and firings across the country (especially from DOGE) will be especially represented in next month’s jobs report. Linda also shares updates on the latest update from Fed Chair Powell and his latest updates on rate hikes and stock market volatility, and why his comments impacted the market positively.
