In this episode of Indelibly Marked, popular 911 dispatcher Gaby (@9​⁠ shares her unfiltered testimony — revealing the trauma that shaped her long before she ever answered a 911 call.
Born in Mexico, Gaby opens up about growing up in an abusive household where her father was unfaithful and physically abusive toward her mother. After her mother left and remarried, Gaby describes a painful shift in her home life — one where she was emotionally and verbally mistreated by both her mother and stepfather.
She speaks candidly about being called foul names, being overly controlled, and being deprived of normal childhood experiences like cartoons, video games, and social freedom. That mistreatment led Gaby to believe her mother did not care for her or want her, creating deep emotional wounds that followed her into adulthood.
Despite spending her childhood trying to be “the good kid” and earn trust, Gaby says she never felt protected, believed, or chosen.
Later in the episode, Gaby pulls back the curtain on life as a police dispatcher, sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly of the job. She opens up about emotionally triggering calls, moral conflicts within the system, and the mental toll of staying composed while people experience the worst moments of their lives.
She also speaks about going beyond protocol — choosing to listen to callers who just need someone to vent — not because she has to, but because she believes being heard could save a life.
