Joe Barnes brings a word of encouragement as he exposits the prophecy from Isaiah chapter 9. Isaiah was writing in a time of fear for Israel with national rulers failing to stand up for justice, and the Babylonian empire becoming increasingly threatening. Throughout history, powerful rulers have abused their powers which can make us nervous about surrendering to God. But we are reassured that God is holy, and love, and as Isaiah reminds us, His Son is the Prince of Peace. More than tranquility, peace (our translation of the Hebrew shalom) speaks of an overflowing fullness in which everything God has made works harmoniously together to bring about His best and finest purposes. Joe reminds us that the cradle of Jesus's birth points to the cross, and beyond that to His return in glory, establishing His new heaven and new earth.
