For thousands of years, storytelling has been woven into the fabric of human existence, serving as a guiding light through the complexities of life as far back as the most ancient of cultures. In today’s fast-paced world, gathering around a fire to share stories is becoming a distant memory. Throughout my own journey, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know some of the most incredibly inspiring people whose stories will crack you open. Their journeys are not just tales of survival, but profound testaments to the undeniable resilience of the human spirit. Welcome to How’d You Do It: a podcast dedicated to the timeless art of storytelling, where stories of resilience come to life, igniting a spark of hope and reminding us of our innate capacity to overcome adversity and embrace the fullness of life.

  • Episode 43. Pain Free is Possible with Lucas Ruhnke
    Nov 12 2025

In this episode of How’d You Do It?, I’m honoured to sit down with Lucas Runke, who opens up about his journey of a routine dental procedure which triggered severe, relentless facial nerve pain that completely upended his life. From being fully alive, building a business, making music, relationships to finding himself living in constant agony, Lucas walks us through the physical, mental, emotional and relational toll, the unbearable pain. He tried everything: neurologists, drugs, surgery, alternative therapies, and nothing gave the roadmap he needed.

Eventually, Lucas discovered a different path, pain neuro-plasticity, which allowed him to rewrite his relationship to pain. From 24/7 agony to now living, rather than just surviving. Today, Lucas is mostly pain-free, and as a pain-recovery coach he helps people reclaim their lives from chronic pain.

Episode 33. Creating a Life You Won’t Give Up On with Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld

In this episode, I sit down with legendary skydiver, author, and speaker Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld, whose name has echoed in the skydiving world for decades. From watching his TED talk as a brand-new student in 2011 to jumping with him in 2013 and now finally sitting with him in this full-circle moment, this conversation felt incredibly special.

Dan shares the extraordinary story of how he followed a childhood dream of human flight into a life of skydiving, championship competition, and ultimately—resilience in the face of unimaginable tragedy. After surviving a devastating plane crash that claimed 16 lives, left him in a coma, with substantial injuries, Dan made the seemingly impossible decision to heal, return, and continue living the dream he had fought so hard to create.

We talk about the mental strength it takes to leap into the unknown, the profound lessons skydiving has offered him (and all of us who’ve flown beside him), and the true meaning of success - doing what you love with your whole heart.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to chase something wildly meaningful—despite fear, obstacles, or the odds—this conversation is for you.

Episode 32. Behind the Kitchen Doors with Darius Waters

In this episode, I sit down with my friend and longtime Shambhala neighbour, Darius Waters, for a really honest, down-to-earth conversation about his journey through addiction, burnout, and ultimately, healing.

Darius shares what it was like working in the high-pressure world of fine dining as a chef—where long hours, heavy drinking, and drugs were just part of the culture. It wasn’t until the world slowed down during the pandemic that he finally saw his drinking for what it was: a problem that was taking over his life.

We talk about the moment he knew he needed help, his experience walking into his first AA meeting, and how hard it was to get sober—not just physically, but emotionally. He’s now nearly three years sober, studying to become a youth counsellor, and mentoring kids through a powerful long-term program that supports youth for 12 years, no matter what.

Darius is full of heart and humility. This episode is a reminder that healing is possible, that people can and do change, and that sometimes, rock bottom is what opens the door to a completely new way of living.
