In 1604, King James convened the Hampton Court Conference, where a new English version of the Bible was conceived in response to the problems of the earlier translations perceived by the Puritans, an orthodox faction of the Church of England. • CODEX 4.12 Common Sense by Thomas Paine
    Mar 31 2026

Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The elegantly plain and persuasive language that Thomas Paine used touched the hearts and minds of the average American and was the first work to openly ask for political freedom and independence from Great Britain. Paine’s powerful words came to symbolize the spirit of the Revolution itself. General George Washington had it read to his troops.
