  • Historical Currents
    Jan 15 2026

For almost two decades I hosted history-related radio programs that were broadcast throughout North America on a Francophone network of French language community radio stations. One of these weekly shows was Au courants de l’histoire, which translates in English as Historical Currents. One of my topics was the life and deeds of a talented man that produced works that would enchant millions of North American kids, young and old. E196.

  • Codex 4.2 Common Sense by Thomas Paine
    Jan 13 2026

Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The elegantly plain and persuasive language that Thomas Paine used touched the hearts and minds of the average American and was the first work to openly ask for political freedom and independence from Great Britain. Paine’s powerful words came to symbolize the spirit of the Revolution itself. General George Washington had it read to his troops.

During its colonial period, Coffee was first introduced to the Mexican state of Veracruz, from the Antilles. Mexico cultivates mostly shade-grown Arabica coffee which grows particularly well in the southern coastal regions—conditions that, in Mexico's relatively cooler climate, are favorable for higher-quality coffees. Join Mark and Wayne Armstrong of the 5 Minute History podcast who kindly shares his brief look at one of North America’s favorite legal stimulants. E195.
