  • Island Alert – Ep. 12 | Chris Pico on PulsePoint and Saving Lives on Kaua‘i
    Mar 15 2026

Ever wonder how everyday people on Kaua‘i can help save a life during a cardiac emergency?

In this episode of Island Alert, host Max Richardson sits down with Chris Pico, Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Lifeguard, to talk about PulsePoint, a mobile app that alerts nearby CPR-trained responders when someone experiences cardiac arrest.

Chris shares how witnessing a dramatic rescue as a teenager inspired him to become a lifeguard and eventually join Kaua‘i’s Ocean Safety Bureau. The conversation then explores how PulsePoint works, why every second matters during cardiac emergencies, and how community members can step in to help before first responders arrive.

From lifeguard training and rescue experiences to the technology helping save lives across the island, this episode offers an inside look at how Kaua‘i prepares for emergencies and how residents can be part of the response.

  • Kauaʻi County Council Update 03.12.2026 Wastewater in Wailua
    Mar 13 2026

In this episode, we break down one of the biggest discussions from the March 11 Kauaʻi County Council meeting: the future of the Wailua Wastewater Treatment Plant.

County officials are requesting an increase in a state loan from $14 million to $25.5 million to fund repairs at the aging facility near Lydgate. The plant is more than 60 years old, located in a tsunami zone, and unable to expand — raising questions about whether the County should continue investing in repairs or focus on building a new wastewater treatment plant.

Councilmembers debated the cost, environmental compliance requirements, and long-term infrastructure planning before ultimately voting to defer the decision for two weeks while they review additional information.

Listen as we break down what happened, why it matters, and what to watch for when the issue returns to the Council on March 25.

  • Kauaʻi Voices | An Extended Conversation with Tim Leichliter of Kauaʻi Coral Restoration Nursery
    Feb 21 2026

Tim Leichliter, president and director of operations for Ho‘omalu Ke Kai, shares the story behind Kaua‘i’s first coral restoration nursery—a multi-year effort rooted at Nō‘milu Fishpond (Lū‘aupele) and built through community, partnerships, and persistence.

Tim explains how their team collects “corals of opportunity” from man-made structures (instead of removing healthy coral from the reef), then uses careful quarantine and microfragmenting methods to help coral grow faster eventually fusing into larger, more mature colonies that can better support reef restoration.

You’ll also hear what it really takes behind the scenes: setbacks like facility damage, restarting timelines, and the long-game commitment it takes to do restoration work responsibly. Tim closes with ways the community can get involved—including volunteer workdays and where to learn more.

  • Kauaʻi County Council Update 02.04.2026 | Shoreline Bill Resurfaces
    Feb 4 2026

A major shoreline setback measure is moving again at the Kauaʻi County Council and Olivia explains how it could shape how the island manages coastal hazards, shoreline structures, and future development.

In this quick County Council update, we break down why councilmembers unanimously advanced Bill No. 2984 (the version recommended by the Planning Commission), what changed from earlier drafts, and what the bill aims to tighten up — including clearer technical definitions, stronger limits on repairs to existing shoreline structures to prevent “repairs” from becoming expansions, and better alignment between setback calculations, permitting, and enforcement. The measure passed first reading and is set to return for second reading on March 18 during a public hearing.
