Welcome to the Apple Box Podcast! In this episode, we talk with Toronto-based director, Yana Malik. Yana shares how she was displaced from her home in Ukraine and forced to flee in order to escape the war. Without a home, her family, or her friends, Yana travelled across 8 different countries in search of a new place to call her home. Lost, confused, sad, and scared, Yana finally landed in Canada. Being homeless, she knocked on as many doors as possible in order to restart her filmmaking career. Eventually, she met a commercial producer in Toronto, who believed in her vision and her story. Now, at 25 years of age, she is working consistently as a music video director whilst branching into narrative and commercial projects. Yana shares her creative process as a director, what she looks for in a cinematographer, what inspires her storytelling, and so much more.
