In Part 2 of Friedrich Zawrel’s story, we meet the doctors of Spiegelgrund. Dr. Ernst Illing and Dr. Heinrich Gross were psychiatrists working inside Vienna’s infamous children’s institution during the Nazi period. Under the banner of “racial hygiene,” they helped run a system that targeted children considered disabled, difficult, or socially undesirable. In this episode we look at their backgrounds, their roles within the Nazi medical system, and how ordinary medical careers became intertwined with one of the regime’s most disturbing programs. • E319: Friedrich Zawrel (part I)
    Mar 6 2026
Friedrich Zawrel grew up in Vienna during the Third Reich. As a child, he was labeled “difficult” and “unmanageable” by the authorities. That was enough to place him inside the Nazi welfare and psychiatric system...a system that decided which children were worth keeping alive. In this episode, we look at Friedrich’s early life and how he ended up at Spiegelgrund, the children’s ward in Vienna where hundreds of young patients were imprisoned, abused, and murdered as part of the Nazi “child euthanasia program". Friedrich was one of the few who survived. This is his story! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

During a year of much struggle and overwhelm I am so fortunate to have found Annie and Johanna's podcast. Listening to Fresh Hell feels as if I am sitting in on a chat between two articulate, engaging, empathetic friends who always seem to have a great story about murder, mystery or the macabre to tell each other. I find it refreshing that in addition to the factual information about any given topic they also share their compassion, outrage and international perspectives. Fresh Hell has been absolutely wonderful company, especially during a year with a lot of alone time. Thank you Annie and Johanna, please keep going!

They do a lot of research and I can’t wait for them to finally meet in person. Like hanging out with friends who love the same things you do. And all those things are terrible.

Have to recommend.

As a latecomer to this podcast, I listened out of order and this is one of the first ones that I listened to and I was absolutely hooked. great storytelling, very empathetic podcasters. I highly recommend.
