  • He is the Head of the Church: Colossians 1:15-18
    Jun 24 2025

In this episode of Footnotes, Greg unpacks two sermons—“He Has the Whole World in His Hands” and “He Is the Head of the Church”

Colossians 1:15-20 form what’s known as the Christological hymn, a rich theological declaration of Christ’s supremacy over all creation and the church. Greg explores how Paul uses the concept of the “firstborn” to link Jesus’ role as both Creator and Redeemer, the one who holds all things together and leads the redeemed family of God. Drawing from Jewish cultural context and Old Testament prophecy, especially Psalm 89, Greg shows how Jesus fulfills the long-anticipated role of the exalted Son, securing our adoption and salvation. In all things—creation, resurrection, and the church—Christ is preeminent.

  • Stable and Steadfast: Colossians 1:9-12
    Jun 19 2025

In this episode of Footnotes, Greg revisits the June 1 sermon, “Stable and Steadfast." Focusing on Colossians 1:9–12, Greg explores Paul’s prayer that believers would grow in spiritual wisdom and the knowledge of God's will—centered not on abstract guidance, but on knowing and following Jesus. He explains how spiritual maturity is a Spirit-powered, grace-driven upward spiral: knowing God leads to obedience, which deepens our knowledge of Him. Greg highlights we’re not self-made saints, but qualified by God, strengthened by His Spirit, and joyfully welcomed as His children.

  • Through Him and for Him: Colossians 1:9-23
    Jun 2 2025

In this episode of Footnotes, we begin our summer series in Colossians by exploring the opening chapter of Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae. Greg unpacks how Paul confronts false teaching that sought to lower Jesus to the status of angels, and instead elevates Christ as both the Creator and the Redeemer. The heart of the message is clear: Jesus is not merely the bringer of the gospel—He is the gospel. From bearing good fruit to growing in knowledge, Paul ties all of Christian life back to the preeminence of Christ, in whom all things hold together.
