  • Christian Theological Seminary marks centennial
    Jul 23 2025

Christian Theological Seminary (CTS) in Indianapolis is celebrating its 100th anniversary as an independent seminary, offering a range of graduate programs in theology and counseling.

Founded in 1855, CTS has a rich history of pioneering change and social justice. Originally part of Butler University, CTS became a standalone seminary and has since expanded its offerings to include six graduate programs through its School of Theology and School of Counseling.

Christian Theological Seminary (CTS) in Indianapolis is celebrating its 100-year anniversary as an independent seminary.

CTS offers mental health services through its Counseling Center, which provides services on a sliding scale to ensure accessibility for all, including marginalized communities.

"One of our missions at CTS is to be open and affirming and accepting and to make things accessible to folks who may or may not be able to have that accessibility," Dr. DeNeen Collins, the Director of Recruiting & Admissions at CTS, explained.

The seminary also collaborates on poverty mitigation through the Faith & Action Project, aligning with its core values of advancing scholarship, embracing diversity, and promoting justice and healing.

CTS offers scholarships for its graduate programs, providing financial assistance ranging from partial to full tuition coverage.

This initiative supports students pursuing careers in theology and counseling, fields that may not always lead to high-paying jobs.

As the Christian Theological Seminary continues to celebrate its centennial milestone, it remains committed to its mission of education, counseling, and community service, fostering an inclusive environment for all who seek to learn and grow.

  • Backpack giveaway for local youth in Indianapolis
    Jul 16 2025

The Indianapolis Black Firefighters Association and Principles of Doctrine of Christ Ministries are hosting a backpack giveaway this Saturday to support local youth.

The event, now in its fifth year, was initiated in response to a tragic incident in 2021 when a 12-year-old boy was killed while playing video games at his grandmother’s house. The organizers aim to provide both school supplies and spiritual support to children in the community.

“We wanted to pray for the youth, pray for their protection,” Deborah Cooley of PDOC Ministries said. “Because they do need the supplies, but you do need prayer to get through this life.”

The giveaway event will feature backpacks tailored to different age groups, ensuring that children from elementary to high school have appropriate supplies.

“The supplies this year are the same for each age group, but the backpack sizes vary,” Cooley explained. In addition to the backpack distribution, a bookmobile from the Indianapolis Public Library will be present, allowing children to select books of their choice.

This initiative aims to encourage reading and provide children with autonomy in their learning. The Indianapolis Black Firefighters Association will also participate by offering tours of a fire truck, adding an educational and interactive element to the event.

Cory Floyd, President of the IBFA, emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing societal issues.

The backpack giveaway represents a collaborative effort to address both educational and spiritual needs within the community, with organizers encouraging early attendance due to the event’s first-come, first-served nature.
