We start with the Republic of Venice, a journey that takes you to Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece and Cyprus. At a time when Europe is experiencing resurgent nationalism, these guidebooks propose an alternative point of view. Instead of following today’s borders, they take you on a journey through time and space to lost kingdoms, republics and empires, searching for what might unite us rather than what divides us. 

This podcast takes you on the road from Bergamo to Venice, in the former Republic of Venice. The author of the book, Giovanni Vale, and the French radio journalist Julien Trambouze cycle across this extinguished country, telling stories from the past and the present, and giving useful tips to organize a visit.     In this episode we take a tour of Venice following the advices of Francesco, a member of "Venezia non è Disneyland", literally "Venice is not Disneyland" – a group of Venetian friends that publish everyday stories about the bad impact of mass tourism or on the contrary about the beautiful initiatives launched in their city. They have a Facebook page and an Instagram account which are quite popular in the area of Venice, with over 100,000 followers. There is no cycling in this episode as it is forbidden in Venice, and it's also not very useful to have a bike in a city with over 400 bridges.

    The fifth episode of our podcast takes us from Treviso to Venice. This time we cycle alone, along the national road and across the Ponte della Libertà taking us into the heart of the lagoon. We walk around Venice discover why a glass of wine is called "ombra" (litteraly 'shadow') in the city, and how are gondolas repaired. 

    ITINERARY – We follow the so-called "Terraglio" the national road going from Treviso to Venice. It is not the best itinerary but we will explain you why we chose this particular road.
