  • Beccaria's treatise On Crimes and Punishments, which condemns disproportionate and irrational penalties in general as well as torture and the death penalty, is said to mark the peak of Enlightenment in Milan. Its translations were widely read by statesmen and policy makers in Britain, America and France. This translation also features the anonymous commentary, attributed to Voltaire.

History that needs to be taught in high schools!

Nearing 7 decades on this rock, I've never discovered a better social/civic explanation regarding crimes and punishment. I recently heard an attorney refer to it in passing, which tweaked my curiosity. I'm so glad it was on Audible, it became my Sunday afternoon read, the chapters are short but concise. The narrator's syntax was precise on her subject emphasis.
