Main Topic

Quote
  • The quote this week sums up half of this episode
  • Pitch is important to aid understanding
  • Pace is important because it has a direct correlation on pitch.
  • If you are speaking too fast this directly affects your diction

Summary Of Last Week
  • Pause, pace and pitch
  • Pause important tool to give you confidence, emphasise points, build tension, limit um’s and ahs’s, punctuate, listen and feedback

Pace Overview
  • Importance Of Pace
  • A rate of progress
  • Important to find right pace
  • Don’t want to go too fast
  • Don’t want to go too slow
  • Identify what the context is
  • If rapping for example don’t want to go slow
  • If you want to make a talk interesting don’t want to go too slow

Context
  • If reading something you want to be consistent
  • If talking about something want to be engaging so might want to vary the pace.
  • E.g. use pace to your advantage. Add drama by starting to tell a story then gradually getting more into a frenzy.
  • Make a point can slow down and combine with pauses.
  • You need to speak slower than you think

Pitch Overview
  • The tone of your voice
  • Avoid monotonous tone
  • Try not to let pitch fall towards end of sentances
  • use pitch for emphasis

Avoid monotonous tone
  • This occurs when we are not concentrating on what we are doing and when we are scared
  • Don’t vary pitch at all
  • Very boring to listen to
  • Be prepared for your audience to go to sleep

Normal Sentences
  • Keep pitch up right to the end
  • Don’t let pitch fall down
  • Think about happy thoughts
  • When we are happy and positive then our pitch stays up
  • Now think about when you are sad or scared
  • What happens to your pitch
  • You may not even be able to get your words out
  • Otherwise you may start ok but the end of your sentance will tail off

Pitch for Emphasis
  • When you are in a market how to traders attract your attention. They shout
  • What happens if your in immediate danger the pitch and tone goes up and gets loud
  • Sometimes that is important to get someones attention
  • Use sparingly
  • What happens when you whisper. Everyone has to listen that bit harder
  • This can be used to highlight an important bit of your talk
  • You can purposely drop the end of the sentence so no one can hear. To make a point

Bringing it all together
  • Pause, pace and pitch when used together can make a massive difference
  • Pause can give you a chance to think about what it is you want to say
  • Pace has to be used for the context you are given
  • Pitch can be used to emphasise and to make sure that your words can be understood

Lets practice
  • Find a poem to read. Work out where you need to alter your pace and pitch. Work out if there are any places that you should...
