[[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. -Psalms 40:1
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. -Psalms 40:2
DEVOTION
Based on Psalm 40
David’s testimony reminds us that waiting on God never wastes time. "Patiently" doesn’t mean passively—he cried out while he waited. God "inclined" to him, literally bent down to listen. The horrible pit and miry clay represent situations where our own efforts only sink us deeper. But God doesn’t just rescue; He establishes. He pulls us from the mud and plants us on solid rock.
He doesn’t just save us from something but to something—established goings, firm steps, a secure future. This passage promises that our pit isn’t our permanent address. God specializes in elevating the stuck, stabilizing the shaky, and establishing the uncertain.
A.C.T.S. REFLECTION
ADORATION: Faithful God, You bend down to hear our cries. You are the lifter of the fallen, the establisher of the unstable, the rock beneath sinking feet.
CONFESSION: I confess my impatience in waiting and my attempts to escape pits through my own strength. I've doubted Your timing and questioned whether You hear my cries.
THANKSGIVING: Thank You for hearing every cry from every pit. Thank You for not leaving me in the miry clay of my mistakes. Thank You for solid rock beneath my feet and a sure path ahead.
SUPPLICATION: Lord, help me wait patiently for Your deliverance. When I'm stuck in pits of my own making, bend down and lift me. Establish my steps and make my path secure in You.
PRAYER
A man who has riches without understanding, is like the animals that perish.
PSALM 49:20
Heavenly Father, Holy God, and King of Glory, You hold justice and eternity in the palm of Your hands. There is no wealth I could accumulate to bring me peace or financial gain that would give me salvation. My soul is dependent on Your grace and Your grace alone. At night, worries about finances and security can consume me, but You are the only one who gives me safety in times of trouble. I do not rest tonight with peace in my finances but in Your faithfulness. There is no material possession I will carry with me into eternity. But the treasure I have in You will last forever. I rest in that truth tonight, Lord. In Your Holy and precious name, I pray, Amen. 🙏🏾
