One of my strengths in this business is building solid teams. As we've grown, we have put great leaders in our team, which has brought a certain level of safety and comfort that has allowed my business to operate very smoothly. Lately, two of those positions left for personal reasons.
When this happens, it leaves us in a tough position. We can either be upset and puff our chest out, or bless and support the people who have served our business for so long. I heard a quote that said something to the effect of, "How you treat your employees on the way in versus how you treat them on the way out is what differentiates you as an employer".
This attitude, in the short term, has increased serotonin levels among the group. But, in the long term, these decisions will lead to more referrals, more people interested in working for our company because we treat our people so well.
We have been gifted an incredible opportunity to lead and work alongside people, to learn and grow together. Eventually these people will come and go, and it feels like a breakup. But, how you treat people in your organization whenever they must leave says a lot about your character as a business owner.
