Welcome back to Cat Clayton Mysteries!

Today’s episode is chapter 12. Spoiler alert: If you don’t already dislike Nick, the main scene in this chapter will do the trick. But I have to admit; creating a character readers love to hate is a lot of fun! Without further ado, here’s this week’s episode!

I am halfway into book 1 in this series and enjoyed the story. The characters were likeable, story was interesting, and narration (by author herself) was good!

A great listen and good narration

Nice, lighthearted story. Had to adjust to hearing her dog's words, but...what dog owner didn't wish they could communicate w/their dog. 😉

Fun to listen too.

If your idea of an exciting main character is a grown woman who: can’t hold her liquor but continually gets drunk and behaves badly in public, keeps talking about “if” her boyfriend breaks up with her when he’s been having an affair and has already kicked her out of the house, chases after said looser and his mistress getting in physical altercations, and whines and pouts amazed that no one will take her seriously despite her childish behavior, then bless your heart this is the story for you.

It’s fairly obvious from the start that the boyfriend is going to be ‘revealed’ as having an affair, that plus his patriarchal demeaning attitude makes him rather unlikeable, but it doesn’t take long for you to have sympathy for him. How he treats the main character is unacceptable but I can understand why anyone would want to leave her. Luckily she grooms dogs and isn’t in PR because she can’t make a relevant or persuasive argument professionally, personally, or regarding her ‘sleuthing’ hobby. She’s been wronged by the lying cheating boyfriend, been shot at, and stalked, perfect sympathy fodder for a stereotypical small gossip hungry town that glorifies victimhood. Yet any sympathy anyone might have for her evaporates in the glare of her, well being her.

Kudos to the writer for recording her own book on the fly without proper equipment. Sound quality varies episode to episode but its not too bad and is stable within the episodes. As someone with a sound booth at home, that’s not easy. She’s also made fewer mistakes on which character she’s voicing and editing than other books on Audible.
