Hello, Emory community. Today is Monday, September 15, 2025, and here are the latest updates from our campus. Emory University has announced the discontinuation of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and the closure of related offices. Interim President Leah Ward Sears stated that this decision aligns with new federal mandates requiring institutions receiving federal funding to eliminate DEI initiatives. In a significant leadership transition, former President Gregory Fenves has been appointed as Chancellor, focusing on national engagement and philanthropic efforts. Leah Ward Sears, a distinguished alumna and former Chief Justice of Georgia's Supreme Court, has stepped in as Interim President. The Board of Trustees has initiated a nationwide search for a permanent president. On August 8, a tragic shooting occurred near the CDC and Emory University campus. DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose was fatally shot while responding to the incident. The shooter was also killed. Fortunately, no civilians were harmed. The university has since reviewed and enhanced its emergency response protocols to ensure campus safety. Emory's Center for AI Learning, in partnership with the Rowen Foundation and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, launched the "AI + You" tour this summer. This initiative offers free AI training to Georgians, aiming to equip residents with skills to thrive in the evolving job market. Additionally, the university hosted Emory Impact Day on August 30, continuing its tradition of community service. Hundreds of students, faculty, and staff participated in various service projects, reinforcing Emory's commitment to civic engagement. Looking ahead, the Emory community can participate in several events: - On September 3, alumni and friends gathered to watch the Chicago Cubs take on the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field. - Emory's Center for AI Learning continues to offer workshops and courses throughout September. These sessions are designed to help participants integrate AI tools into their professional and personal lives. That's all for today's update. Stay informed and engaged, Emory.
