Each year, millions of tons of household textiles end up in landfills, from rugs and carpets, to bedding and linens. So, in this episode of On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella interviews textile practitioner Emma Peters on the environmental impact of household textile waste, and how we can reduce it.
With a long-standing background as a commercial textile designer, Emma Peters is currently a lecturer at The University of New South Wales. Emma Peters’ research operates at the nexus of industry and academia, generating new opportunities for discarded home textiles, and aims to progress the economic benefits of circular economy systems in Australia.
In this episode, Emma Peters sheds light on where our household textile waste typically ends up, and reveals some lesser-known examples of household textiles. Additionally, Emma Peters discusses the common mistakes people make when managing textile waste, and shares tips on what to look out for when shopping for sustainable textiles.
Together, Marie and Emma Peters answer questions — from curious users of the internet — about managing household textile waste, and discuss simple yet effective ways to extend the life of our household textiles. So, tune in this week for a fascinating deep-dive into the challenges and solutions for reducing household textile waste!
