After a trial in 2010, Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes, while Barzee, who pleaded guilty in 2009, was released early in 2018 after cooperating with authorities. She told Netflix’s Tudum, “I hope they realize they're not alone, and that they don't have to be ashamed.. even after terrible things happen, you can still have a wonderful life.”

While Smart’s father, Ed, and sister, Mary Katherine, participated in the documentary, her mother, Lois, chose not to relive the trauma.
