Former CJI DY Chandrachud addressed the Umar Khalid case by stating that 'if a person remains in jail as an under trial prisoner for 5 or 7 years and is finally acquitted, the lost years cannot be compensated.' Chandrachud reiterated that bail should be the rule rather than the exception. Chandrachud also recalled granting bail in cases like Congress leader Pawan Khera and activist Teesta Setalvad. Chandrachud also specified three conditions under which bail can be refused. The Umar Khalid case has sparked a nationwide debate over judicial processes and the rights of the accused.
