  • Managing Up: A Guide to Elder Care and Family Financial Planning for the Sandwich Generation
    Jul 8 2025

Welcome to EWM INSIGHTS where we celebrate on HUMAN CAPITAL!

EWM INSIGHTS Advanced Planning Series with James Bergeron, J.D.

In this latest episode of Insights, host Paul Ellis sits down with Jim Bergeron from Nuveen to discuss the complexities of elder and parental care, a pressing issue for many families today.

This "Managing Up" conversation highlights the critical role of proactive, empowering planning that encompasses not only logistical and financial considerations but also the emotional and interpersonal dynamics influencing elder care.

With summer gatherings approaching, it’s the perfect opportunity to discuss the needs and wishes of aging parents and relatives.

The episode emphasizes the importance of open communication. Paul and Jim highlight that while discussing elder care wishes can be challenging, it is crucial for ensuring family members receive the care they desire. They suggest fostering a relaxed atmosphere for these conversations, even recommending games like The Ungame to help navigate sensitive topics, thereby transforming a potentially daunting subject into an opportunity for connection and understanding.

The hosts also stress the importance of legal and financial planning, including updating wills and establishing powers of attorney, to honor the wishes of aging family members and prepare for unexpected situations.

As they explore various housing options, they emphasize the need to understand individual preferences and research alternatives, such as in-home care. Ultimately, the episode encourages families to view these conversations as opportunities to strengthen their relationships and create a legacy of love and dignity.

  • The Investment of Fatherhood: The Ultimate Long-Term Investment
    Jun 11 2025

Welcome to EWM INSIGHTS where we celebrate on HUMAN CAPITAL!

In this special classic replay edition podcast, we explore one of life’s greatest investments: fatherhood.

Paul emphasizes that while financial investments often dominate discussions, the impact of being an active father is profound and lasting.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, Paul shares heartfelt reflections on the importance of nurturing relationships with children. He argues that the true measure of wealth lies in the time spent with family, as involved fathers significantly enhance their children's emotional and psychological well-being.

Staggering statistics reveal that children with engaged fathers are more likely to excel academically, avoid trouble, and pursue higher education.

This involvement can dramatically influence a child's success, highlighting the critical role of emotional support and guidance.

Paul also discusses fatherhood as a generational investment, likening it to managing financial assets. Just as investors nurture their portfolios, fathers must actively engage with their children to create a legacy that extends beyond material wealth.

    Takeaways:

    • Fatherhood represents a profound investment that significantly impacts children's emotional and psychological well-being.
    • Active fathers enhance their children's academic performance and reduce behavioral issues, fostering long-term success.
    • Just as financial portfolios require nurturing, so too do the relationships we build with our children.
    • The essence of true wealth lies in the time and presence we dedicate to our families.
    • Children of engaged fathers are statistically more likely to pursue higher education and achieve stable employment.
    • The legacy of fatherhood transcends material wealth; it is an investment in character and resilience.

This Father’s Day, let’s celebrate the fathers committed to this noble and lasting investment.

    The Mansions of The Lord

United States Military Academy Glee Club

To fallen soldiers let us sing

Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing

Our broken brothers let us bring

To the mansions of The Lord

No more bleeding, no more fight

No prayers pleading through the night

    Just divine embrace, eternal light

In the mansions of The Lord

    Where no mothers cry

    And no children weep

We shall stand and guard through the angels sleep

While through the ages safely keep

    The mansions of The Lord

Greatest stated accomplishment: Someone once asked him, "General, what do you consider your most important accomplishment?" Now, of course, you are asking this question of someone nearly 95 years old, with somewhat of a resume.

"What is your most important accomplishment?" He replied, "It hasn’t happened yet. My most important accomplishment will be when I cross that line at St. Peter’s gate and meet my God and my [wife] Julie."
