Psychosis refers to a collection of symptoms that affect the mind, where there has been some loss of contact with reality. During an episode of psychosis, a person's thoughts and perceptions are disrupted and they may have difficulty recognizing what is real and what is not. It is a mental health condition characterized by a loss of touch with reality, including delusions and hallucinations. People experiencing psychosis may have distorted perceptions or beliefs about the world and themselves, and may struggle to differentiate what is real from what is not. Psychosis can be a symptom of several different mental health illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression. Treatment typically involves medication, therapy, and support to manage symptoms and improve functioning.
