  • 4. Future of Energy: The Special Case of MAGLEV - European American Experiences
    Dec 16 2025

    Send us a text

Rail is an obvious solution to the environmental problems presented by personal transportation systems (how we think of using motor vehicles). Rail systems are well developed in Europe for passenger service (80% of the load); the priority for rail in the US is for freight (80% of the load).

    Why?

    · Could Europe transition its legacy rail systems to make them more efficient? What would it take for the US to transition its rail systems to serve passengers more intensively and to upgrade its freight systems?

    · There have been plenty of missed opportunities, but there are MAGLEV systems up and running quite successfully in Japan and China that use German technology. The economic case for MAGLEV is compelling.

This is a particularly fascinating topic, as solutions exist to a basic problem associated with the energy transition. To address the challenges requires understanding how the technology, the resource endowment of specific contexts, public policy (state decision making), and the market system all interact.

  • 3. Future of Energy: Electrifying Transportation Infrastructure
    Dec 12 2025

    Send us a text

Transportation contributes to 20% of carbon emissions globally, and there is progress in using electricity to replace conventional transportation systems that use hydrocarbon fuels.

Is there enough attention paid to the development of the infrastructures to support this transition?

What will it take for consumers to buy-into increased electrification of their transportation choices and what kind of eco-system is required for this transformation to succeed? How similar are Europe and the U.S? Could Hydrogen be considered a viable power source?

  • 2. Future of Energy: Provision of Electricity – Feeding the Grid Now and in the Future
    Dec 11 2025

    Send us a text

The architecture of the centralized electricity grid was established in the late 1890s, served as an institution throughout the 20th century, and in the past two decades has begun to cede influence to the rise of distributed energy systems.

Our Panel will discuss, how the experiences of Europe and the US compare and given the pronounced changes in public policy in the US, how might one think about scenarios for the future.
