  • How to Build Autonomy in an Insurance-Based Medical Practice
    Jul 28 2025

What if you could reclaim freedom and fulfillment without leaving insurance?Dr. Brittney Anderson, board-certified family medicine physician and President of the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians, joins us to share how she’s doing exactly that.

Since launching her private practice in 2022, she’s proven that physicians can build thriving, autonomous practices while still accepting insurance.

In this episode, Dr. Anderson breaks down the systems, mindset, and boundaries that have helped her create a patient-centered, profitable practice—without sacrificing her values or her voice.

You’ll also hear how she’s mentoring other physicians to do the same, and why her passion for medical education and community impact drives every move she makes.

If you’re a physician thinking about private practice—or want to know what’s really possible within traditional models—this conversation is for you.

Dr. Anderson attended college at Duke University, earned her medical degree from the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB), and completed her residency at the University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency.

Whether you’re dreaming of opening your own clinic or want to make your current practice more sustainable, this episode is packed with insight and encouragement.

  • Unresolved Trauma: The Hidden Root of Psychiatric Symptoms
    Jul 15 2025

Will Van Derveer, MD is a psychiatrist and leader in the field of integrative mental health care. After starting a psychiatry practice in 2002, Dr. Van Derveer soon discovered the grave limitations of conventional psychiatry.

Over the next decade of clinical care, he gradually introduced integrative interventions such as gut-brain axis interventions, microbiome analysis, hormone balancing, mindfulness practice, exercise and diet prescriptions, as well as psychedelic therapy into his work. He co-founded Integrative Psychiatry Institute (IPI) to deliver education for mental health practitioners in advanced tools for resolving the root causes of symptoms often missed in conventional care settings.

The IPI year long psychedelic-assisted therapy training is the gold standard training in this emerging field, having graduated more than 2000 licensed professionals. Dr. Van Derveer’s innovations in the field of integrative mental healthcare are fueled by his conviction that anyone can heal if provided the right combination of support. In addition to his clinical practice and teaching, he has staffed several studies sponsored by Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, investigating MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD. Dr. Van Derveer is co host of the Higher Practice Podcast for optimal mental health, and his first book, Psychedelic Therapy, with a foreword by Gabor Mate, will be published by Shambhala Publications in early 2026.He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University Medical School and completed psychiatry residency training at the University of Colorado.
