  • How Curb to Car Helps Blind People Find Our Uber

    Discover Curb to Car, an innovative accessibility app designed to help blind and visually impaired users locate their Uber rides with confidence. Learn how MIT students and assistive tech expert Scott - aka Kayaker - partnered to solve one of the trickiest challenges in ride-sharing for blind travellers.

    In this episode of Double Tap, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece explore how blind users can now seamlessly identify and locate their ride-share vehicles. They chat with Tage, a sophomore at MIT and team lead of the Assistive Technology Club’s Blind Assistance team, and Scott, who co-designed the app Curb to Car.

    The team discuss the challenges of visually identifying Uber cars, the technical and accessibility hurdles of building an app from scratch, and how computer vision and stereo depth sensing solve real-world problems. They also touch on AI-powered recognition, the importance of accessible age verification on platforms like Discord and YouTube, and the future of apps that continuously describe the world around you.

    Whether it’s navigating crowded airports, busy streets, or complex pick-up lanes, Curb to Car empowers users to safely and independently locate their rides.
