Culinary Alchemy or Just Chemistry?

Love you guys. One thing…is it possible that Bay leaves act as/contain a particular enzyme and/or blocker/inhibitor that interacts with other chemical constituents in dishes and produces more complex or “rounded” flavors? If you compare it to the chemical action of the botanical constituents in ayahuasca, for instance, which allow for the activation of psychoactive chemicals in otherwise inactive/inert ingredients, it might have some sort of effect in that way.
