What if the brands we trust and the products we buy are actually contributing to the very crisis we are trying to solve?Today we are exploring this question with a guest who’s addressing consumerism, corporate power and the climate crisis directly. Maren Costa is a climate justice and workers’ rights advocate. Currently serving as a U.S. advisor at workforclimate.org where she empowers tech employees to push back against the growing influence of big tech. She is also featured in the Netflix documentary “Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy” where she highlights the role of companies in continuing unsustainable practices. The film reveals how big brands manipulate us into buying more, wasting more and continuing unsustainable practices. I encourage all of you to check out that documentary. With over 20 years in tech leadership roles at Amazon, Microsoft and Adobe Maren co-founded Amazon Employees for Climate Justice which helped push Amazon to sign its Climate Pledge and create the Earth Fund. After being fired for her activism, Maren gained national attention and sparked legal action. She also led initiatives at Microsoft and ran for Seattle City Council in 2023 on a platform of climate justice and workers’ rights. Maren believes that our biggest problems, such as like climate change and inequality, are caused by unfair systems and that real change comes from collective actions.
